If it is off by default, nobody will enable it and it will render some important stats useless. The RBI stats for example are our major source of information about "actual" weapon balance and we don't want to lose that.

IMHO DCC's stats are too extensive, they show when you played etc. - IMHO that should not be available to the public. In case of the RBI stats, I think I'll remove the single-match stats as I don't need them and as they could raise the same privacy issue.

If such a feature is "opt out", stats would still be "useful" but players can easily opt out of the tracking.

But actually, you're confusing two things - stats and tracking. With stats, you can't track when someone played, from which you can infer where he's from, on which days he had "special occasions" like birthdays etc. if he plays less than usual. With highscores, you still can't infer that, but you can find out who plays more and who plays less. With DCC's tracking, however, I think you can find out too much about someone. DCC should at least remove the graphs from his stats page, like the playing time of the day graph.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

I have no problem with weapon stats etc... anything which doesn't identify me is fine... keeping track of when I played is insane and way over the top.

Thanks for removing them my stats on the rbi server btw.

I got a hold of Sxen and he deleted my stats, for which I'm thankful. I did get a lot of shit from him and the others on the irc channel though, so I'm going to ask...

Is it really that fucking unreasonable to not want to be tracked when playing the game?

You sound as if you have something to hide. You have strong opinion, dude.

I for my part don't care a bit if my play-stats are logged or not. I can understand the fact that people don't like to be "recorded" without noticing or without being able to control this, but since this is really such an "unimportant" statistic (compared to other statistics your ISP and many other companies such as "google" do, this gamestats recording is a JOKE compared to these, and you shouldn't be afraid of anything).

It wasn't just gamestats (which is what annoyed me)... it tracks WHEN you played, etc, not just how many frags you got, etc.

Ack, I am not sure if my RBI server stats are over the top already - but DCC's certainly are.

On the RBI stats, to prevent abuse for long-term tracking, I removed the stats for every single match and only present map totals and grand totals. Single-game stats are now only available for one week; after that they will get removed automatically.

This also has the side effect that the directory listing http://mensa.ath.cx/~polzer/nexlog/ now has a NORMAL length...

I kinda see your point. You seem to be engaged in keeping your privacy.

BUT: Xeno dude, are you really so blind that you can't see? If big brother wants to know everything about you, he has a pretty bunch of possibilities to get his informations easily. Not only big brother, also the small brothers can. It's really useless to try to hide, it won't work, as all our web traffic can be and is recorded in every detail anyway, right?

On the other hand, what gives you the idea that somebody could be that interested in you?

Maybe all those facts and the fact that we all know about the facts makes you look a little ridiculous in some people's view. So if you expect that people whose facilities you use should respect your wishes concerning privacy, you have to own them their opinion about the strangeness of your point of view.

Or just keep away then, and be assured, nobody wants you to do so. :?

Just because it's possible for Big Brother to track you down it doesn't mean we shall make this as easy as possible.

Tracking scores is one thing - but tracking when someone was playing is in a completely different league. Just imagine you'd be playing at work (kids, don't do this) and your boss who happens to know your nick would have that data available.

Well, first of all, the MOTD on the DCC servers tells you that you're tracked.

Second, my nick ain't that unique. Everybody can play with mine. Like I could play with another one's nick as well.

Last but not least you can create your nick with Hex code like I posted above. Won't be read then. Or just keep away from servers which are tracking stats.

However, if my boss would want to take a look what I'm doing (he knows btw!), he surely won't visit a stats page, he'd just easily take a look into the server logs or whatever and recognize if and how long my computer is connected to game servers, Game homepages, IRC channels. Surely very interesting to see how good/bad I play. So what are we talking about actually? This is kiddish IMO.

When the DCC team coded the stats recording and the stats pages, everybody was like all wow. So just go on bothering and it maybe won't be long until we got some servers and a great Nexuiz fan page less. Nice.

PS: no, like everybody knows I'm neither the owner of the server, nor the DCC website, nor am I the creator. But I'm amongst the majority of people who really love the DCC servers and the stats system as it is. So please: hands off!
