Java can, but only to the server the applet is loaded from. Not to an arbitrary server, for security reasons.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again
You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Well, I'd just make a PHP backend that listed the servers in something similar to the scores.log format, and then load that through ajax and parse it, allthough you'd need ports opened up on your server. My webhost didn't mind doing it at all, which could be good and bad in some cases...
