Your opinion about this #nexuiz.gather

Postby xoboo » Sat Jan 27, 2007 10:48 am

Heyas ppl.

Hi, my name is xobas and i entered this world of nexuiz like 2 weeks ago, by coincidence, but i started playing it and liked it. Meanwhile i repared also that the community is a bit too small, and i thought we should make a channel called nexuiz.gather, where people could play 3on3 ctf or igib’s or any other mods. It’s like mixed games.
I’m in this world of gamming about 5 or 6 years. A lot of games have gather channel and I think, its a nice ideia for Nexuis would expand the community. So maybe there would be more interested people to play this amazing game.
Back to the Question of the channel: The channel would have 1,2,3 bots where you can type !on (open), !off (close), !add (join), !del (remove), those are only the important commands. There would be even more commands to make a better gamming. To see how it works here’s some examples from another game: (soldat game)

FannyBoy : !on
SoldatGather - Soldat.Gather Bot (By DarkNoddy) found a free server and is now running...SoldatGather – Use !add to add or write !Commands for more information.
SoldatGather - Type: CTF | Playing: 3on3 | FannyBoy - x - x - x - x – x

Ghouly : !add

SoldatGather | Type: CTF | Playing: 3on3 | FannyBoy - Ghouly – x - x - x – x

After all slots being added:

SoldatGather | Type: CTF | Playing: 3on3 | FannyBoy - Ghouly - `Cwaniak - Sp4z - llabo - LLSSNEN
SoldatGather - Soldat.Gather Bot is full and teams have been randomly generated:

SoldatGather – Alpha Team: Cwaniak - Ghouly - FannyBoy

SoldatGather – Bravo Team: Sp4z - llabo - LLSSNEN

SoldatGather - Alpha Team will pick the first map, Bravo Team will pick the second map, if needed ctf_Voland is the tiebreaker map.
SoldatGather - Clicker: Soldat://85.131.237.138:23874/way

After the completing the adding (here in a 3on3) the bot sends you a pm with IP of the server you will play....

I would like to hear your opinions about this gatherchannel. I dont mind if its negative. Every response will help me..

Thanks. Xobas.

Well, it's currently not possible to assign teams like that because the IRC and in-game nicknames usually differ (color codes, forbidden characters on IRC, maximum nickname length of 9 characters)... and the game code has no way of checking the IP address of who is joining. So this would need a new Nexuiz release with a new engine that passes the IP to the game code.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

and sorry to edit..

but in q3, bot give us the ip and pass in gather.channel ( its an ideia for nexuiz.gather ) and not in pvt..and when ppl join the server.. we choose 2 guys, they played 1on1 with knife or anything and after that they choose the team :P

I think you misunderstood it. The irc bot decides the teams, and then the players make sure they join the server and that they choose the team they got assigned. Thats the way it works in all other games I played trough gather channels. The player just makes sure their irc nick is similar as in-game, so the others know that you belong there.

So in other games there is no specific support for gather channels? There should be... but if other games also don't really support it, it can be easily done for Nexuiz too.

hmm, you would, however, need servers for that that are dedciated (or "support") the bot, because the bot needs to have a list of servers he can reffer to.

And btw: Nexuiz doesn't have any password protection. No, I am not joking, it does really not have a password protection.

Well, I'm basically not against this idea. However, I initiated quite some gatherings already by simply asking people to play with me (for example a 3on3 CTF, mixed players). I simply slapped the people of which I knew they are just on IRC, and that aren't "idiots" :D

This way it always worked out so far. Mixing up the teams randomly is a bad idea anyway, since skill level in Nexuiz varies a lot. Map selection was done directly on the server until now.

I like the idea of the channel itself, because it would serve the idea that only the players join the channel if they are interested in participating in gatherings. However, I'm not sure about all this bot things. I would prefer a more reduced bot, one which isn't connected directly to a server, but one where a player can set up a new gathering, e.g. entering "!newgame 6 <Mixed game CTF>", and the bot now publishes the opportunity to join a 6-player game called "Mixed game CTF" , and needs 5 more players to be added (they do it e.g. by "!join 1", what means to join the game with ID 1 (I would suggest that the bot automatically assings an ID to a freshly created match so that there can be more gatherings at the same time, and the players can chose which one they want to attend) ).
So the bot would not care about the server (because, usually, the one who initiates a new game should already have a server, or ask others if one is available before starting a new gathering), it wouldn't care about the mapchoice either (sometimes the teams wanna play 2 maps, sometimes more, so the mapchoice would be done on the server directly, thre's a voting system anyway). The bot wouldn't care about the teams either, just list the players. Creating a fair team should be done in irc or on the server manually, the bot simply can't judge the players skills.

just my 50 cents

"And btw: Nexuiz doesn't have any password protection. No, I am not joking, it does really not have a password protection."

And we probably won't add one anytime soon, even though it would be a simple matter to do so.

The problem is - ever played old UT? Lots of servers... and >50% are password protected. Really annoying. So IF I would add password protection, I'd make sure such servers won't appear in the server list as they are not public.

To ensure this, I added "sv_public -1" to the Nexuiz server, which means that it doesn't respond to external queries any more. That makes it disappear from the server lists immediately (well, it appears without name and 9999 ping then). If I'll ever implement password protection, I'll force sv_public to -1 to not piss off players using the public server list.

Also, if Nexuiz supported password protection, it would suddenly become much less open - good players then wouldn't play on public servers "because they're full of noobs", and without invitation you can just play with "noobs", teamkillers, insulters and chatspammers.

Now on how to set up a protected server the right way: http://www.openvpn.net/. Give the players who should be allowed to join a VPN certificate or a username/password combination (OpenVPN supports both), and run the VPN server on the same machine as the Nexuiz server. Use "net_address" to restrict the Nexuiz server to the private address. That's secure and already works.

Or just rely on sv_public -1 - then the server won't appear on the public list so nobody can join. To prevent people from remembering IP/port, you could wrap a script around the server to use a random port on each startup and restart the server when it quits, and let the server quit when empty (set quit_when_empty 1).

Also, after a game has been set up and before telling the players, such a gather bot could rcon "kick # 1" to "kick # maxplayers" to the server to ensure it's empty, or just "quit" it and let it restart automatically.

yeah, as I already got a demonstration of that script there would be a cool way to do it

any player can create a new gathering, he can specify the size (XonX) and also the server IP where it will be played (so you aren't "bound" to servers controlled by the script, but can use other ones, too). Then other players can add them selves or delete themselves, and once there are enough players the bot will give the server IP to each player in the query window.

Of course it would be nice to have some "free2use" servers for gathering, provided in the topic of the channel or so.
