Nexuiz and Nexuiz-SDL... PLEASE READ

Postby 003 » Mon Feb 19, 2007 4:35 am

Ok, with Nexuiz.exe all my mouse buttons work however it is a little slower than SDL and the sound has no positioning at all.

With Nexuiz SDL mouse 4 and 5 do not work but the sound is much more positioned (you can tell where sounds come from) and it runs faster.

So, either I play with reduced speed and sound with no positioning

Or I play without the use of my mouse 4 and 5 (both of which I have weapons bound to) and have better fps and good sound.

This is a problem. Either nexuiz.exe needs to have the sound system of sdl implemented and have the speed tweaked, or the sdl version needs to be fixed so mouse buttons 4 and 5 work.

Standard nexuiz.exe has positional sound for me, and framerates are smooth even on high quality. So these aren't bugs.

It can be positional, but you just ear all sounds at once, through thick walls and everything. SDL is more realistic. Also I forgot to mention the mouse CONTROL is better on SDL.

Even in SDL you hear sounds through thick walls, as the sound system does not know about the map geometry.

Such a sound system, however, is currently in development by Qantourisc.

Sound should not be any different in SDL and non-SDL, apart from the following factors:

  • misdetection of the number of speakers. In that case, put the right value in the cvar snd_channels
  • misdetection of the order of the channels: try playing with snd_channellayout and snd_swapstereo

As for the mouse buttons: it's SDL's fault that you can just use three buttons, and the SDL library would need to get fixed for more buttons.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

wasn't there a solution for the mousebuttons? Oh yeah, at least in windows you can teach certain mouse drivers to bind the buttons to keys, and that's what you should do to get your other mouse buttons working.

However, I've got no idea if other OSes mousedrivers provide that feature.

For Linux there is a way:

I don't know if that tutorial is still up to date, i haven't tried it since my mouses thumb buttons (6 & 7) work fine in Nexuiz (even with the SDL binary).

Guess thats only a sdl-on-windows thing. However as more games on windows had that problem i did use the mouse driver to make mouse buttons act like \ and ] buttons.
On linux the only program that has only 3 mouse buttons is sauerbraten (and i guess cube too) thats kinda sad.

Speaking of sauerbraten, I think Nexuiz needs an anouncer like they have. *tired, slow, monotonous, voice* "ten seconds... to quad...... damage." That would rule. (off topic :| )

nah, they should just have grunting noises for the announcer. like "three frags left" would translate to "uhhh! aaauah! eh!"
