List of playable Maps?

Postby ZyanKLee » Thu Mar 22, 2007 2:06 pm

Is anywhere in the i-net a list of the playable maps?

If not, I think I would create one at nwn-server.de - I think that would be a great tool to keep an overview of what is created and what needs to be created.

what are you actually considering "playable" ? Like "really playable" ?

Strahlemann's Map Pack (sorry Strahle!) contains many maps are barely playable due to most cruel performance, especially when playing them locally, not talking about several bugs (which really isn't Strahle's fault, he cannot test anything, and afaik nobody reported them) :?

But barely playable is playable, after all

So?

2.3 will change this.. its performance boost should help those maps in that regard. Basicly its because the map tools do strange things that created a mess in the lightmaps for the engine which it now corrects..

I meant "really playable and worth being played" ;)

ok, sorry I messed my last post up.

I had this idea while searching for maps for my servers. Not the standard maps running on all servers but some specialties.
During this google-run I was missing a list where every mapping-dev was able to present his maps. Perhaps with a download option or at least an option to link to an external download server.

Go buy a new PC Urmel

Back to topic:

You may want to check out the maps in the wiki http://www.alientrap.org/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=Main.CustomMaps.

These are especially made for Nexuiz and work flawlessly.
If you're looking for maps besides the wiki-maps and the standard maps, you should try maps that were made for q3, because Nexuiz can handle quake3-bsp's.
That's how i made the mappack.
The problem is that still a lot of additional stuff is involved to get q3 maps to work perfectly with nexuiz (like all the *.mapcfg stuff and txt files to make the map show up in the menu for the right gamemodes etc.).
Also most of the maps that were made for q3 use standard id-textures, which won't show up in Nexuiz unless you manually edit the shader-files and point to a Nexuiz-texture, but this will most likely destroy the look of the map and is not really worth the work imo.
Also most q3-maps use shaders for scrolling/rotating/blinking/decal/sky textures that aren't supported in Nexuiz and will result in minor or major graphic bugs depending on the specifically use of them in the maps.

So to find a playable q3-map that instantly works falwlessly with Nexuiz is kinda difficult, and i think that you won't find a lot of q3-maps that are not in my mappack and are playable.
Still there are a lot of maps out there, and i haven't tested every map, but i tested a LOT.

And there are still popping out new maps for good 'ol q3 so go ahead and take a look over here: http://lvlworld.com/

P.S.: don't know exactly about the quake1 and halflife-map support though, but iirc it's not working very good. Haven't tested it.

Back off topic (I hope that ain't a problem, I dont wanna open a new thread, or should I?):

I'm quite sure you're joking my tricksy friend :P

Considering to buy a new PC, what would you recommend then? I think my machine is stronger than the average nexuiz players' ones actually (it's an Intel E4300, 1G RAM, GF7600GT), and I mostly play with the low.cfg.
Most of the maps are performing quite well. There are areas in several maps however where there are huge fps drops, especially when playing the campaign. That's odd because the maps themselves are very nice (or most of them).

pukka3dm2 is a great example for a real bad performing map. Playing it online is already cruel, but played locally it's just *argh!*.

Another nice map which is no fun to play is straledm5, the more you come into the middle of it. Never noticed?

A completely sucking map is dubneoc. The gangways are just to tight to move properly, it's hard to get up the stairways and in combination with the bad performance it's just annoying to play it.

I quite understand you don't want to overwork them again, or maybe it's just impossible do optimize them more for Nexuiz, but I'm sure buying a new rig wouldn't be worth the effort. :)
