I run 5 servers - each for 12 players concurrently and no one has ever complained about it, being laggy
But now back to shaggy question:
the largest security risk for your LAN is to connect it to the internet ...
opening a port from the outside is only dangerous, if the server's code contains bugs and those are allowing others to compromise your system.
so be assured - if you would like to set up a server at our home - the risk is not much bigger than without a nexuiz server. do you use Microsoft programs? THAT would be a huge risk
