Running a server (Risks?)

Postby shaggy » Fri Apr 13, 2007 7:25 am

when you make a dedicated server how does it keep going? does it run off your intrnet? what if you turn it off? are you safe? i would have asked these questions in esteels server setup but it is locked.

i have been thinking about setting up a fulltime server so i had a look around on the forum i found a great one its esteels, i was half way done then i thought about the risks so i have decided to can it for now.

for those who want to know it would have been called shaggy's CTF battle i was also thinking about editing the weapons (laser and Nex), if i did i would re-name it shaggy's battle CTF Edited weapons

First of all, you do not want to run a CTF server on your dialup line. 16 Players need more bandwidth than you have.

For a 4 to 8 players DM servers, you may have good chances even with a "normal" connection...

However, when you run a dedicated server on your dialup line, this means that players will experience problems when you download something. You need to get a router than can do traffic shaping for this to work.

Normal CTF servers are run on servers at hosting companies... and these cost at least $20 a month - at cheap providers, and I have no idea if they are any good.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

well I have my server running from my DSL line, and it works generally well. The only reason I chose 10 players on each server as opposed to 20 was due to gameplay reasons. But what div is saying is right. Dial up is defiantly not enough to run a server, I don't thing it's even enough to play nexuiz without lag...

Actually, DSL is still not enough... you need about 5k to 10kB/s bandwidth per client. In upstream. Note that you typically have much less upstream than downstream. For example:

T-DSL 1000 = 1024/128 = 16kB/s upstream = about 2 players
T-DSL 2000 = 2048/192 = 24kB/s upstream = about 3 players
T-DSL 6000 = 6144/576 = 72kB/s upstream = about 8 players
T-DSL 16000 = 16384/1024 = 128kB/s upstream = about 14 players

This assumes that the line is not used by anything else, not even web surfing (or that you run a traffic shaper to basically get the same line quality for the server by prioritizing its traffic), and that the rate limit by the server is 10k/sec, but typically this is not completely used, but almost.

If you really want to host more players, you can reduce sv_maxrate a bit. But note that reducing it too much results in choppily moving projectiles or even players. You should really not go below sv_maxrate 8000 (10000 is default), which would allow you to safely host 16 players on T-DSL 16000.

I definatly have more upload then that, I at least have 350kbps.

350kbps / 8.19200 = 42.7246094 KB/s

Plus I have some bandwidth tweaks for better performance (lowered the server's framerate a bit)

this brings my calculator to 4 players ...
42KB/s / 10 KB/s = 4.2 Players

On some days, I feel like 0.2 of a player.

4.2 means you can actually run 5 players most probably, as most of the times it works out anyway (not all the 10k/player are used up).
