It never has been intentionally changed... only engine-side prediction code has been changed. But this could be it, bad prediction could have thrown you off quite much when trying it with older versions.
But I didn't know it can be done so well on stormkeep... the usual example place for me are the turns in the tunnels of darkzone

which was actually where I discovered the implications of the changed movement code in 2.0 and where I really liked the turn-in-air effect.
IMHO this effect is quite needed in Nexuiz - it quite strengthens laser jumps and complements the Nex (that is, when you were using a jump pad, you can move quite freely in air and aren't an easy target). Silvercity and Evilspace allow for quite some tricks there...

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.
