Yes.

To be on topic, a program working like mklink but for XP is available on sysinternals.com.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Sysinternals.com has been acquired by Microsoft in July 2006.

The mklink-like program for Windows 2000 and newer divVerent mentioned can be found under http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/FileAndDisk/Junction.mspx.

Did they serioulsy have to buy third-pary companies to achieve symlinks in their own file system?

Essentially yes. NTFS has had symlinks since Windows 2000 (more specifically, since NTFS 5.0); however this functionality was neither well documented nor really exposed in Windows.

Well, they didn't buy sysinternals for THAT, as another mklink-like program is in the resource kit.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

Maybe not so much on 1 computer with several users, but think about a family with several people playing Nexuiz, they can share the dlcache folder on a NAS device for example to save bandwidth.

If it is not a family think about several people sharering a a house, etc.

Best regards,

Well on windows nt,2000, xp.. you can create a kind of symlink on NTFS filesytems but i never tried to do that..

so do I, but wouldn´t it by nice to be able to specify the path name for the dlcache in the settings?

Hmm i especially see the usefulness for this on a *nix system with several users, to share the DLcache.
