The console in 2.3

Postby wanderer » Mon Jun 04, 2007 7:04 am

Hi there,

I think nexuiz 2.3 is great, but there is one thing I think should change.

I think showing the console during connection to servers and in between multiplayer games is a bad choice. It gives far too much information to the average user, and can be quite confusing to new players. It even confuses me occasionally.

It's a great tool for programmers, and should be shown optionally, but the average user just want messages like: "connecting to server", "downloading map", "disconnected from server because: XXX".

Greetings,

Well, the "disconnected becasue..." message is actually the reason why it was changed...
There is no other simple way to kick messages and disconnect reasons, so the options are either to drop ppl back to the menu without any explanation or show the console whenever you are disconnected...

There is no standard way to display that info in some other way and i think its a good way to show people 'that there is something more'. The console is a very powerful thing and giving a glimpse of it is a way to introduce them to it..

Well in that case I think that the console should only be displayed when somebody is suddenly disconnected.

I agree the console is a powerful tool, but I think the average end-user doesn't care if object x wasnt loaded, or soundfile B was or wasnt found.

Isnt this a classic example of the difference between the programmers view of what the user wants and what the (non programming / computer noob) user really wants (simple user friendly messages what the program is doing).

I really do not think its worth to put in further work into this.. its not like the players will freak out for seeing the console. And as i said it might get them more interested in that thing.

Well i have to agree it dont feel right.. specialy when a big map is loading on a server and you stare at the console for a min or two.. you think the game crashed or the server kicked you out.

Well the console actually gives a feeling of "its running on and did not crash" since you get a lot of information of what is happening...

Not during map loads since its frozen, specialy on the large maps like greatewall. it will sit there static and wont accept input for a significant amnt of time.
