Nexiuz newbie says hi!!

Postby 800A » Mon Jun 11, 2007 4:50 pm

Hi everybody,
I'm rather new to DM-style FPS (coming from ET) and stumbled upon this game while looking for a certain other quake-like open-source FPS (guess you know which one i'm talking about, too bad it doesn't have a Mac port like Nexuiz does ;)).
At first I only played a bot match and didn't really get a high opinion of Nexuiz (that was just before the latest release, btw), so I uninstalled it (fool!! xD), but I'm glad I gave it another try as it's now growing pretty fast on me and I'm happy to report i'm possibly already addicted ;)
I got hooked by the fast pace and the way-over-the-top weapons, the electro combo and the midair explodable rockets in particular are exhilarating, though air control feels a little weird to me (very difficult to make it as tight as QW bunnyhopping without slowing down).
Regarding air control I've read that the Pro mod changes it somehow but I wasn't able to find any servers running it, can you point me to one?
Also I have a lil suggestion to the devs for future Mac versions: can you please add a Mac OS X Service to connect to a given IP? (it's a menu option that appers in all apps and allows you to use the content of that app's clipboard in another app, in case you don't even know what that is) Most Quake1/2/3-based games I've seen have this, and it's very useful for getting server IPs from web pages and bypassing the ingame server browsers that are usually unreliable (is Nexiuz's too?), since no decent exernal sever browser (a la ASE) exists for Mac.
Finally, some mandatory and well deserved thanks to the development team for this great game, keep up the good work!
Now I'm back to playing CTF (oh, and somebody please make a TeamFortress mod for Nexuiz :D)

Sorry, but that's not very likely to happen... We don't really have any mac developers on our team. divverent is the only one who has a mac and it's a first generation mac mini, that's barely useable to compile the mac binaries and test the most basic things :(
So unless we find any "real" mac developers, there won't be any new fancy features for mac...

There was a "Team: Nexuiz" project, but the code has grown unmaintainable and so the developers decided to switch to a q3 engine and start from scratch under tha name "Project Alaris"

Hi and welcome.

Well if you just want to test the pro physics you can do that locally. Just open the console (shift-escape) and enter gamedir pro and if you then start a map yourself (create, campaign, instant action) it has pro physics.

There is an assault mode in the works for the next version but as KadaverJack already told, the work on a TF kind of mode was stopped as the guys that tried that switched the engines.

Ok, i've tried the pro mod and generally played a lot of Nexuiz the past few days, so here's a few impressions i got (what comes to mind atm, sorry if it's known/obvious stuff)

-comcering the pro mod, i didn't like it much as it mostly takes away Nexuiz's uniqueness and makes it more like a Q3 clone. The one thing pro has that should really be in vanilla Nexuiz is higher sv_accelerate. Really, after a little experimenting with cvars i don't understand why it's so low. I've seen others commenting that movement feels laggy, but with higher acceleration it doesn't!! Also air control is perhaps too much, it feels strange that pressing strafe while in the air makes you change direction almost immediately (i've watched some tricks/ladder matches demos, and it seems to me that even the pros have some trouble controlling that :)), imo it should be somewhat halfway between the normal and pro settings. I've tried tweaking sv_airaccelerate to that effect, but it seems to reduce the speed gain from jumps, so maybe you could have strafing provide less air acceleration and keep the forward-backward jump as it is (or faster! :D)? Dunno if this makes any sense, tho

-performance-wise, the game is not very consistent for me, my fps vary from ~ 400 to < 30 depending on the situation (all fanciness turned off). But then this may be a general mac issue, as it seems to happen with other games too. Also, it tends to feel "choppy" when servers get somewhat crowded (but not that much, even 5-6 players may be enough, especially on some maps)

-loading times are SLOOOOOOOOW! Launching Nexuiz gives me enough time to prepare a coffee before i can join a game. Reminds me of my pirated Impossible Mission cassette for C=64, which I would load, then head off to do my homework, and return when i had finished it, just in time for the game to start. Again, this may be mac-related as i've seen noone complain about it, but it's the only game that behaves like that, and it's hugely annoying

-most skins are hardly visible: initially i chose red for my model bacause it looked cool 8) but it soon became obvious that my chances of survival would improve if switched to the same "mimetic" grey everyone was using. Which i surely did

-the sg and mg need better tracers. Don't know why this disturbs me so much, but it does, especially with the sg. I'd rather have them disabled than what they currently look like. Is there a cvar for that?

This is just a few things that bug me about the game, i hope you will adress this issues because i'm already having some serious fun on Nexuiz, but with a little improvement the fun could be twice as much :D

On another note, you should get the word out more and provide the newbies with easier to access resources (tutorials, faqs, demos, a list of commands/cvars, clans/communities pages, etc). The link page on Nexuiz site doesn't link to any of this though a few Nexuiz-related pages do exist and, of course, a lot of this info is spread throughout the forum, which isn't very convenient. On the other hand, from that same links page, you're just two clicks away from a w§w tutorial... ;)

Well, sorry for the long boring post and, again, thanks for Nexuiz! Hope to see it soon improve to even higher levels of mindblowingly fast frag action :D
