I was just about to suggest NSIS for dedicated Windows installlers. It's sad that 'doze users have to receive such special treatment, but it's unfortunately something that has to be considered in order to increase Nex's popularity.

I may not post around these parts very much, I can safely announce that I am doing my part to bring more people to Nex! Hopefully everyone does the same and we can build a strong playerbase in North America. =]

I'll have to agree with Psychiccyberfreak, I can't imagine anything good coming from users who need an installer to setup Nexuiz.

[Read his post for reference]

Currently, the number of North American Nexuiz players is self - multiplying, there isn't much need to intervene - that is, unless we want actually to scrape [idiots] from the bottom of the barrel.
Or we could get tZork to make an installer using VB6... :P

It's a bad assumption that someone who isn't good with computers would be a bad gamer. Just look at Kojn. I mean that dude can barely tie his own shoe laces, let alone setup a windows shortcut.

:-D

Seriously though, that is a bad assumption. I mean, we all had to start somewhere. No reason to have a sense of elitism in the Nexuiz Community. (There's already plenty of that in the open source community as it is)

On the numbers of north american players...I think there have already seen plenty of north american players in the past, but they did not stick around. I think there are multiple reasons for this.

1. There were few north american servers
2. They didn't see many other north american players
3. They would play on european servers and die from lag.
4. The forum is busy with mainly european players

So basically they have arrived, but there was nothing to make them stick. So I think it's important to setup a few solid servers (Fusion being one of them, but we need more) and then we need to invite them to the forum to get more involved in the conversations. Hopefully, this will keep them around and they will form clans and enter in tournaments, etc.

That's the idea.

As one of the few NE players, I can say that the only reason I'm sticking around this game is because of the game itself. I dont care if the servers are bad or who the players are (trust me after a while you find a way to overcome all that), but the game itself is great. I think we can find plenty of people who share that mindset and not have to worry about making the installation process top notch. But we can all agree that some new servers on our side of the world would be a good idea.

I kept playing Nexuiz for the opposite reason, Cream.
I was referring to Psychiccyberfreak's example:

As for your installer, can you post sources of it?

And as for NSIS... that installer is frowned upon among Windows users because it appears much different from "normal" installers... like, a log window, it basically looks more like a self extractor than like an installer... is there maybe a command line way to make a MSI, and could anyone provide sources for it?
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

I don't follow your logic.

I think when playing Nexuiz online, the quality of the game is strongly influenced (if not defined by) the quality of the servers and the number and quality of available players.

It doesn't matter how great the game concept is if the servers are crap and there aren't other players to play against.

Are you talking about playing campaign mode?
