Server admins using debian/ubuntu packages?

Postby esteel » Sun Jun 24, 2007 1:34 am

Just to inform you.. debian testing and ubuntu (not sure about the version) use the data from nexuiz 2.3 but still the old engine from 2.2.3 and it still might take a while for them to update.

This is irritating and can also lead to problems. For example the anti-wallhack was activated in 2.3 because it nolonger increases cpu usage (or at least only by VERY lowl amounts) So if the engine is still 2.2.3 it could lead to heavy CPU usage and maybe also some of the newworking changes could collide with the old engine.

So please, if you you those packages take a look at your cpu usage and look for further problems or maybe even take a look at your logs and see if players reported problems so we can deceide if i'm just paranoid or there really arise problems as i meantioned. Maybe this is even the cause for some of the player reported networking problems. I'm just trying to make sure.. and hopefully this will be soon solved by an update in debian/ubuntu.

And please remember that we asked server admins to use the new Nexuiz/Docs/server/server.cfg for running your server.. Just to make sure there are even less problems. (No idea though were that file is in the debian packages..

Well, I am running a dedicated Ubuntu nexuiz-server, which was installed from the official Ubuntu repos so I guess it still has the 2.2.3 enigne. I am using this server mostly for playing clone football with my clan members, and several others. Ofcourse they complain about lagging because I am located in Finland and they in Germany, but I also notice that cpu usage skyrockets at times. (Probably because I play and host at the same pc *lol*) Also I have noticed that the hd usage is much, MUCH higher than I expected... Also at times I play 1on1s against my friend who lives in a city about 10km from me. His ping is always under 30, and he hasn't complained about any lag.

BTW. the game itself doesn't still use the old engine, right? And isn't the server engine easily updated manually via the new engine file included in nexuiz23.zip? (By replacing the file: /usr/lib/games/nexuiz/nexuiz-server.bin)

Yes its easy to replace the engine, but when one does download nexuiz-23.zip to replace the engine then one can also use that file for the server :)
And if you use a dedicated server its cpu usage should be rather low compared to your client. But if the server uses more then lets say 20% then its probably a issue with the old binary.
