Difference between server creation ways

Postby obi_wan » Mon Mar 27, 2006 3:54 pm

I just would ask what's the difference between creating a server using the "create" button and creating a server using a .sh file ?

Does a dedicated server needs a powerful graphic card or not ? I think it shouldn't, but I'm not sure...

I'm asking that because I've got a powermac G5 (powerful) and a linux PC (with an onboard graphic card).
Is it better to run a server AND play on my G5, or to run the server on my linux computer (so it will be a 'dedicated' one) and play on my G5.

The server does not need a graphics card at all... so yes, you can run it on the Linux box without any problems and it should be better that way.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Well if you run the 'normal' binaries with the -dedicated option they also do not need a graphic card, but on 'real' servers the problem is that the libraries need for the graphic part might not be installed. On windows thats no problem thats why the dedicated server is missing there. But on linux its nice to have an binary with just minimal dependecies so it will run..

What would you say is the maximum number of players that can be hosted on a lan by a dedicated machine, compared to the number for a non-dedicated server?

Well the non-dedicated server is also playing so for once its not a good idea because someone is playing the whole time and as you might have noticed playing needs quite some resources. No idea on the numbers though.. but i have seen several server with maxplayers 32.. guess the non-dedicated server has too much other stuff to do ;)
