Palm OS port

Postby iSuck » Wed Aug 15, 2007 11:19 pm

Most of you probably aren't familiar with Zquake, but in short, it's a file that allows a palm OS handheld to run quake I.

I was thinking, since Nexuiz uses Darkplaces, and Darkplaces is an upgraded (quake 3 power) quake 1 engine, then theoretically, there should be an easy way to run darkplaces, and furthermore-nexuiz on a palm. (yes, I know it would have to be on the worst possible settings, but it would be a fun experiment)

Any ideas what would have to be done to play Nexuiz on my Palm (please don't tell me the FPS would suck, I know already)

Cool idea, isn't there a small audience for that and consumption of developement time. I don't have I a Palm but I'll to check out ZQuake. (not a put down by the way)

But to answer your question I don't have a solution.

It shouldn't take that much work if it's possible. If it's just plain undoable, then there's no point in trying. I'm mostly asking it it's possible with any work.

Unless you get a palm with OpenGL support: forget about it...

I never thought about that. Palms don't take OpenGL, do they.

Why not try this on a Windows Mobile 5 based Dell Axim X51v? It has a video chip that supports OpenGL ES. It would be too cool to run some sort of Nexuiz looking thing on that device. xD (I even happen to have one)

Only problem is that it has only got around 30MB ram free, and 16MB VRAM, barely enough to run a heavily optimised version of Quake 3 @ 20fps... Maybe one day when they have reverse engineered Linux to run on this? :D

It has got a 640x480 touchscreen,
Intel XScale PXA270 624MHz processor. 64 MB built-in RAM, (mine overclocked to 668MHz :P)
Integrated Intel® 2700G multimedia accelerator with 16MB video memory.
You can get a bluetooth keyboard that works pretty nicely in games too.

If someone seriously optimised Nexuiz for these then maybe it even would be possible :), Although I might be one of the only ones who own a Pocket PC and play Nexuiz :)

Sauerbraten already runs very well on the Axim, it's based on its own engine called Cube, it's just another open source FPS game. I thought I'd note that, it is a nexuiz-looking-thing-ish.

Also, Nex isn't an optimized quake 3 mod, it's based on a quake 1 engine mod called darkplaces, but it's so advanced from q1 that it can run q3 maps and shaders. If you turn down the graphics and resolution enough, you could run it quake-1 style, maybe even with some added features, like realtime dynamic lights.

Windows mobile is a very versatile mobile gaming OS, the only windows thing I'd ever buy would be a microsoft handheld gaming system... the xbox micro or something.
