Platform Stats from Galt's Gulch

Postby John Galt » Fri Sep 21, 2007 7:16 pm

Hi guys. Was just looking through some logs and statistics for my Nex Servers and found this particular snippet to be interesting. These are based on the web logs from my map download server that feeds players on Galt's Gulch servers.

Code: Select all
Operating System   Hits   Percent

Windows         3969    37.2 %
Linux           3668    34.4 %
Macintosh       2517    23.6 %
Unknown         483     4.5 %
BSD             14      0.1 %

Good spread of hits with no simple majority!

On RBI, I got:
Code: Select all
Total:    216047 (100%)
Windows:  121269  (56.1%)
Linux:     63877  (29.6%)
Mac:       30791  (14.3%)
FreeBSD:     108   (0.05%)
Dummy:         2   (0.001%)

Just in August 2007, I got:
Code: Select all
Total:      5757 (100%)
Windows:    2997  (52.1%)
Linux:      1852  (32.2%)
Mac:         906  (15.7%)
Dummy:         2   (0.03%)
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Odd... the Aug 2007 logs are actually not from RBI any more, because RBI no longer uses the server I took the log file from. Still, the numbers look similar. Servers actually using RBI as download location:

Code: Select all
     71 LAN server accesses
580 dp://62.xxx.xxx.xxx (possibly unconnected, PB, Frag24, Stormix, KALM)
    486 dp://67.xxx.xxx.xxx (possibly techtronic, techspec)
    318 dp://69.xxx.xxx.xxx (possibly mikeeusa?!?)
721 dp://85.xxx.xxx.xxx (possibly green, DCC, Dreckloch, nwn)
   2144 dp://91.xxx.xxx.xxx (possibly DFF)
(lots of others, here I only show the Nexuiz server IP ranges with more than 200 map accesses in August)

On the new download server, I got the following OS distribution:
Code: Select all
3588 total   (100%)
1224 Linux    (34.1%)
509 Mac      (14.1%)
1855 Windows  (51.7%)

The following servers use the new location:
Code: Select all
    491 RBI KeyHunt
   2260 RBI CTF
    780 dp://91.xxx.xxx.xxx (possibly DFF)

Only two map accesses were exceptions.

I don't keep more exact logs, so I can't tell who is REALLY using my servers as
map location. But that's fine, that's what it is for. The server names are from
the first part of the IP looked up in the public server list.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Interesting. The US seems more heavy on the Linux side. My stats are just for September so far.

How many RBI servers are there?

I guess I'm crazy for thinking most Nexuiz players were Linux users. The only reason I found it was because I was looking for games to play in my now linux only computer setup. Anyways, some interesting stats.
