Urbanshenkie, indeed, the grenade launcher is different and the strafe-jump bug is fixed. But if I were you I wouldn't expect this to be changed, after all this is a different game, you have to get used to it's physics.
For me the hardest thing to get used to, is movement. I've been playing for I think 2 months and I'm still not very comfortable. You can do crazy tricks like any of those games but even if Nexuiz is fast, the tricks will never "look" as impressive because of the physics (a combination of friction, maxspeed, acceleration, etc.). I've never really played Quake 3 but from the videos I've seen, friction seems high so movement is "tighter". In Nexuiz friction is low so for anyone coming from Quakeworld-ish type of games, movement will seem lagged, as if you were sliding a bit. You can't run in one direction and then change to the opposite direction as fast. Well it's more complicated than just the friction setting, it won't work if you only change that one, other settings are related but it's the main thing I think.
From the searches I've done on this forum, I think many people tried making mods that made the game feel a bit more like other games, but none really took off. I know there are a few cfgs in the data.pk3 that change the physics (there's one for Q3 physics) but I've never tried them, maybe you could give them a try. I don't know if they'll change anything about weapons tho.
IMO it's best to get used to the way things are because the game is not that new, players have been playing it for a while, so unless you can convince a lot of people that it would be better if changed or make the changes yourself, you'll get frustrated and will eventually go back to another game. But if you stick to it (and you should), you will get used to it just like you got used to other games, I know it's frustrating because you have to relearn everything, but you will enjoy it immensely once you start feeling it.
EDIT: speedometer would be nice, I agree. I think it's better to hope for new features than changes in gameplay.
