I suppose with free divVerent means free as in freedom -> source code available. Most of those free players are developed in countries where it is legal to develop them but stricly speaking it would be illegal to do the same in the US (or most other contries) because of those patents. VLC is developed in france as far as i know.

Free players are hard to sue as i suppose companies would loose more money then they get for doing so, the bad publicity of this is also disliked as those things are mostly small projects being beating by a big company. So all in all its not worth the hassle but those players are illegal in many contries after all.

Most of those codec have good players and encoders available for no money for private use. This however does not make then free in the FSF sense. Many players are included somewhere.. Why do so many people use windows media player though it sucks?

Quicktime is legal but not free (as freedom) which this discussion was all about..

- with free I mean you don't have to give money to get the player
- when i speak of available source code, i say GPL, not free (even if it is not really exact)
- there are GPL softwares that aren't free

I will export my video in theora format, so everybody will be happy

But the soundtrack will not be GPL... i'll make two versions of the video :

- one with a soundtrack created by a friend of mine, so completly legal but not GPL...
- another one with "Roots Bloody Roots" by Sepultura and Pavarotti as soundtrack.... totally illegal, but so exciting
