The video is a bit small but it look nice. A simple download would be good to have :)

How ironic, a recording of free software in a proprietary format.
Got 'Nux? - GNU/Linux and other free software support.

@a-thing > you seem to be really sticked with this idea of full-gpl everything...

in this case, a non-GPL format (aka what you are calling "proprietary") doesn't mean that it isn't free.
Most of proprietary formats does provide a free player, so where's the matter ?

I'm doing a nexuiz video... and doing everything with GPL solutions would be really impossible for me. My working tools are not GPL. I bought them, but they really aren't GPL.
And after ? should I stop because of that ???

That it's illegal to distribute players that support this format without permission of the patent holders. mplayer and VLC for example are illegal in the US just because of the patents.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

i'm using final cut to make videos. I bought a license, and i am allowed to export H264 files for example. And to distribute them. And there are free (and legal) players that allow you to read those files.

Is it illegal for me to distribute H264 videos ???

I'd say Theora is at the same level.

Anyway, which are the free and legal players for H.264? Or is that codec not patented?

I'll take a further look at this theora codec, found that i will make some tests.
But it seems that the most used players for reading theora files are VLC and mPlayer... and you say they are illegal :?
(how bizarre, if they were so illegal, why would they always exist.... ?)

But i really want you to explain me what could be legal from your point of view ?
Another thing i don't understand... : if patent holders don't allow anybody to provide a free player for their codec, how can this codec become known and be used by people ???

I think quicktime should be a legal software... ;)
