Nexuiz fun stuff and trivia

Postby C.Brutail » Sun Jan 27, 2008 1:33 pm

I've gathered some interesting info about our beloved game, so here are some fun stuff and trivia:

Did you know, that...:
-Nexuiz's developement was started around 2000?
-Nexuiz was going to switch to Tenebrae in 2002?
-Nexuiz was to be a commercial game?
-Nexuiz was going to be sold for $5?
-Nexuiz's name's origin is still a mistery? There's an urban legend about a former developer called Nexiuz, and when he registered www.nexuiz.com, he made a typo, hence the name. But this is an urban legend, even Vermeulen can't assure this is corect insformation ;)
-Nexuiz was developed completely over the internet, and most of the developers haven't even met eachother in real life?
-leileilol tried to put Frikbot into Nexuiz?
-In nexuiz 1.0 the the nex, the hagar and the machine gun looked totally different? The electro had a different looking skin too?
-In pre-1.0 Nexuiz versions the grenade launcher was a huge pickle?
-Some maps were removed due to lost source files?
-The electro has the text AT Corp on it referring to "Alientrap"? And it has a text on it's down side "Morphed"?
-There was no electro combo in 1.0, and the hagar acted differently too?
-There was a scrapped character that looked a lot like an alien in the early alphas?
-Nexuiz was originally going to have a gargoyle (LOL!) then it evolved into some other character due to creative differences?
-Earlier versions of the crylink had ricochetting particles? It hadn't damage the player, but it was very heavy on network load, so it was removed from the game.
-In early test versions the nex gun's fire rate was much more higher, and it had a yellow trail?
-In nexuiz 1.0 the laser's kick power was much lower?
-Nexuiz 1.0 did not have bots and CTF?
-Nexuiz 1.0 was not 100% GPL compatible, as it had some stock Quake3 textures by mistake?
-Earlier versions of Nexuiz did not have a chat macro system? The first map that used location macros was Facing Worlds for Nexuiz.
-Nexuiz's menu was changed at least 3 times?
-There was another "old" forum, but it was closed after a security issue? Too bad it's closed, because it had posts even before nexuiz was released?
-Nexuiz's absolute minimum system requirement is around a 700Mhz Celeron with a GeForce2MX 64Mb? For ultimate settings, you need a GeForce 8800 GT.
-Nexuiz runs better on Linux?
-The nexuiz community is one fo the most friendliest out there?
-If you provide quality code or maps, and you release it in GPL, you're work might get into the official game? Eg. esteel and divVerent become a coder, tZork has made a few maps and patches, Morphed made the new electro skin etc.
-In most of the maps C.Brutail makes. there's a hidden easter egg room?
-Apart from bots and spammers, the only man that got banned from the forums (even from the old one) because of bad behavior is the well known troll, MikeeUSA?

Write your own fun stuff and trivia here too :)

-The urban legend I had always heard was that the original concept artist misspelled Nexiuz as Nexuiz in the original logos, and it was never corrected. Once again, nobody can confirm.
-Some maps were removed due to lost source files.

I remember this stuff... I was pretty excited when /. had an article about a fully-free GPL multiplayer FPS back a few years ago!

It sucked when everything off the old forum was lost though!

Did you know Nexuiz was going to switch to Tenebrae in 2002? (I had to convince Vermuelen not to in a PM. I think it almost tried switching to Telejano as well)

Did you know I was trying to put Frikbot into Nexuiz and failed in its early, early stages? Early on, Tei, Sajt and I were coders for the project

Where is Tenebrae 2? The last time I heard of it was in 2005.

Cool man, interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing :). I didn't really get into nexuiz until 2.1ish.

It's amazing how much Nexuiz has grown since 1.0 I remember playing it, and finding it just about unplayable for a number of reasons. Still, the game managed to cultivate a sizable player base, and then two things (at least from what I could tell) happened to really ramp things up. First around release 1.5, the engine became much more optimized, and was playable on lower end systems. Then, last January, the game got on the cover DVD of Maximum PC, dramatically increasing the playerbase.

SInce then, all the new/revamped maps, weapon models, have been steadily improving the game. I can't wait to see the new menu system, and would love to see some more new content(the new maps in SVN are quite nice).

It's good to see interest in this game and it's development continue on.
