[idea] A server effect

Postby shaggy » Tue Jan 29, 2008 11:16 am

I don't know if this will take off or not, but I was thinking since 2.4 is coming out soon now is probably the best time to get it rejected ( ;) ).

I was thinking of a "demo" server. All it does is plays demos through the server. Almost as a video tutorial server...

that's.... interesting!

but it would be easier to convert the demos to video and upload them to YouTube or something.

That's an interesting idea, after a demo you vote for the next demo you want to see...
like... amazing scenes/matches
tutorials for bunnyhopping, laserjumping, mortar or rocket boosts...

Aaand... this could be made into...

NexTV! If somehow you could pipe out the demo while a match, you could spectate the player wo actually connecting the server they are playing on (delayed by 10-15 seconds of course to revent cheating :) )

Code it if you want - but certainly it won't be in 2.4. Unless you get a patch for it done in time ;)
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

I'd like to re-open this thread and TRY, to get it done.

So someone with an idea of how I would go about it could you please check if what I think should be done is right?

1. Find the code for the server and demo's
2.....

I have no idea about how to do it.

I don't have any idea how to do it right either.

Either, you do a HUGE engine patch so it can stream demos to connected players, and show a voting screen in the end.

Or, you do a HUGE Nexuiz game code patch to record all player/item changes to a file, and play that file back later.

I once had a proof of concept of the latter, but it missed lots of effects and sounds. It showed all player actions right, though... but I don't have the code any more. This was over a year ago.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

When i first read this idea i thought it would be insanely work-intensive, but maybe there is an easy way of doing it, afterall. Can a map trigger demos?

I'd assume, to save some time, we could take the demo playing code and run it through the server...

Possible ideas:
- Maybe there is a way to "embed" items into the server.
- Maybe we could make a new menu/page pop up. Like the team selector.
