Nexuiz On PS3?

Postby shak » Sun Mar 02, 2008 6:38 pm

hello, i was wondering if making a native port of Nexuiz to the PS3 was possible. Or even playing nexuiz on the Ps3 using the "other OS" with the graphics card, wifi and controller working :D.

Also if anyone is able to create something like this i would be willing to pay them a fairly large amount of money. (50ish bucks)

I tried getting Nexuiz to work with psubuntu on ps3. No success. I don't think the kernel can access all opengl features yet or something like that...

Last thing i heard was that Linux on ps3 didn't even support 2D acceleration, not to speak of OpenGL. (3D acceleration might even be restricted by the hypervisor...)

And as for a native port: development consoles are very expensive and the licence for the sdk if probably incompatible with GPL.

UT3 and Nex are sorta similar in very basic respects - though visually they look a lot different, the weapons often boil down to the same things and they share a lot of game types (DM, TDM, CTF, etc.)

This would be pretty sweet, it'd be easier to get my friends to try :D.

Since console profits come from game license fees, Sony has blocked access to accelerated video through their hypervisor, as KadaverJack noted. That rules out playing Nexuiz on a ps3 under an "other OS". The game OS requires purchase of the ps3 development kit, which I'm sure isn't cheap.

I think the only way we'll see 3d indie games on the ps3 is through ray-tracing rendering, since as far as I know that would be suited to a system with many cores but no accelerated video. However, I don't know what I'm talking about here. :)

In theory could the video calls be piped to their own separate core for software rendering that'd perform quickly?

Albeit the "real" 3D hardware is guarded and blocked by the PS3 Hypervisor one can get some level of usable OpenGL acceleration by using the Cell SPUs

http://www.mesa3d.org/cell.html

it's very much work in progress, but I guess it may give "good enough" speed one day for lower Nexuiz quality.
