Minimum system requirements to host a server?

Postby Calmatory » Tue Mar 04, 2008 1:59 am

Has anyone ever tried to host a server with a slow machine? I doubt that my 333 MHz Celeron with 512Megs of RAM is up to it, but I'd like to know anyway. Can't test it right now anytime soon, thus I am being forced to ask here. Is there any info about the minimum system requirements for the server?

My Athlon 1200 has a hard time hosting, and can't play well at all. Min requirements are pretty much the same (just as much data is processed), but the video card is not critical as it is text-mode. I would guess a 1 gig should be OK, and a 700 meg min cpu would be as low as I'd take it. These are just guesses though. Also you'd have to take into account the number of users.

Well, I'd quite disagree with the server being "about the same" as the client in CPU demand. I don't know how the server works "under the hood", but I assume that it doesn't do client-side stuff like physics processing and 3D calculating etc. I think it just takes data from people and delivers it to others, with some server-side variables which it calculates. But as I said, I don't know. :P

Someone please enlighten me!

The majority of the game happens server-side, down to things like zooming. Running a dedicated server can be quite cpu-intensive. I agree with MaKR, I wouldn't go lower than a high-end Pentium-III, and even that would only be comfortable handling a low player-count.
