Use Nexuiz for TV commercial

Postby inspector » Fri Mar 14, 2008 9:24 am

I hope my question is at the right place here since I couldn't find any contacts on the website.

I work for a Post Production company and were creating a TV commercial for a client of ours.
We need a shot of kid playing a game for about 1.5 sec.
Since most games have strict copyrights and can't be used for something like this I thought maybe we can try a GPL based game.
I thought GPL and GPL2 where against any form of broadcast of the software but im not sure about that.

Even then I still wanna ask the creators of this game if they have a problem with a 1 sec during shot for a Dutch TV commercial.

thnx in advance!

Hi there.

The 'info' page http://alientrap.org/nexuiz/information.php has a contact right in the first sentence, the team leaders email address (vermeulen@alientrap.org).
Then against GPL is not against broadcasting but against 'deriving without making the sources available'.. GPL also states:
Code: Select all
The output from running a
covered work is covered by this License only if the output, given its
content, constitutes a covered work.  This License acknowledges your
rights of fair use or other equivalent, as provided by copyright law.

I think using a 1.5 sec shot IS covered by fair use and also does not fall under the 'derived work' clause.
However i think its fair to ask for a small 'thanks for alientrap / nexuiz' line in the spot or a a link from your site to the nexuiz.com site?

There'd be no problem with that at all,
There was a student film project a while ago, about a few gamers that try to win a national deathmatch competition, that used Nexuiz pretty much exclusively. So I definitely try to encourage any publicity like that.

Thank's for this information. I'll send them an e-mail right away (ah I see he allready replied) :D
Since im a programmer I know what to expect from GPL / GPL2 in code terms this on the other hand is a new story for me so thank you for explanation.

Hi,

BTW, I'd be interested to hear if it's used. Maybe a link to the forums if it, (the ad. I mean), is available on the web?

Cheers
