SDL?

Hey there!

I had a peek in the readme, the FAQ and searched on the forums, but I just can't seem to find out what the difference is between the two binaries in the Nexuiz folder? I'm no computer wiz, so please bear with me. :) But what's the difference really? From what I know SDL stands for SimpleDirect Media Layer or something, and is mostly about 2D graphics, I could be wrong here. What's the deal with the other "ordinary" binary?

The only thing I can notice is that on my MacBook Pro C2D 2.4 GHz 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM GeForce 8600M GT with OSX 10.4.11 the SDL binary is way, WAY, faster. Rather high settings, and rarely if ever does the FPS drop below 60. It averages at about 120-140. This while the "ordinary" binary rolls on at about 18-50 FPS. How come?!

The SDL binary uses the Simple DirectMedia Layer libraries for accessing your hardware; translating keyboard, mouse, and joystick for input and accessing your graphics card for output.
In some cases, this can be better, as you've seen, while for certain hardware, the native opengl method is better.
Also, I would expect SDL to work well, the main development machine for SDL right now is a Macbook Pro C2D.

I wouldn't mind to see DarkPlaces go SDL only, seeing as it works so well. Usually, whenever you have a problem, you just start the SDL binary instead, and see the problem magically disappear...

SDL gives ME problems.
Laggy mouse input and strange behavior when in window mode.
And I get 53% less fps in SDL.

So we can't use SDL only :)
