Clan match : [S] vs Rev0 4v4CTF 03.28.08

Postby Dokujisan » Sun Mar 30, 2008 7:49 pm

http://www.optimalclan.com/ is updated with demos from last friday's match between [S]troggs and Rev0lution clans.

This was the first "official" CTF clan match in the growing north american clan community. We've done some pickup matches and a couple matches between Rev0/Vortex/optimal before, but they were done spontaneously and not planned out at all with spectators watching.

This match on Friday had 22 spectators with a total of 30 people on the server. It was fun. Hopefully, the next clan match will have even more spectators. The server stayed in the 0 - 4% CPU usage range (mostly coming from apache running).

MATCH SUMMARIES:
On Accident, Rev0 had the upper hand from the beginning and got multiple caps within the first 5 minutes. [S] started picking up their pace and got their first cap at the 8-minute mark, but they were already down 161 - 56. [S] kept it competitive from then on, but Rev0 steadily increased their lead with a final score of 351 - 229.

On Lavaflag, the match started after a short warmup period. In the first 10 minutes, Rev0 built up a small lead with 90 - 51 mostly through flag return points. Rev0 continued to build up points through flag returns for the rest of the match. Despite Pug getting a last second flag capture for [S], the match ended with Rev0 winning with a score of 194 - 116.

I'm surprised nobody answered to this topic, this seems like a first in Nexuiz history to me.

4v4 with 22 spectators, to me that proves that Nexuiz can be a competitive game. It's a small victory for me because months ago I was trying to convince people that Nexuiz needed spectator slots and some people said it wouldn't work and that the game did not need this feature (quite a few people in fact). I actually gave up for a while.

Dokujisan set up 3 private servers a while ago running greenmarine's mod and we spend many hours on it every day, a lot of duels, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 tdm and ctf. There's always many spectators watching and learning. The NA nexuiz scene seems to be in good shape now. Some players like Dokujisan spend a lot of time looking at people playing on public servers scouting for players with potential and inviting them to his servers, they get to play with good players and get a lot of tips from them about their gameplay and they're all progressing very fast. Spectators watch them play and when match ends they give feedback on what they should work on. We're still far from being skilled like Euro players but at least we're making a lot of progress.

All we need now is some kind of league to push for more organized clan matches, which should happen soon.

So yay for Nexuiz!

atleast your scene is 'alive', i'd rather be in america at the moment just so i could play some clan games..

European players just dont seem to care, which is probably one reason why i dont really play as much anymore.

Well you have a lot of pickup games going on, which is nice. It's the spectators part that's missing IMO. The way it works for us is that whenever we want to play there's usually people playing on the servers so we can simply connect there and take a spot when ongoing match ends. And we can spend hours on the server without disconnecting, there's always players up to play some more games or other players connecting. That's the reason we don't really use the pickup channel much.

Thanks for the comments, nifrek.

I've always thought that there were a good number of decent players around, or okay players with great attitudes, but there was no glue to bind everyone together. There was a severe lack of servers and no attempt at organizing anything. In three months, I feel like so much has been accomplished here. I'm excited to find out what it could turn into over the coming months.

I was happy that my server held up nicely with 30 people on it (8 players) during that match. I know there are plenty more than could have joined but they weren't online at the time. For future matches, I'm gonna increase the number to 64 just to be safe. That's the max possible, right?

I'm not the most knowledgeable or best nexuiz player, but I do have some organizational and networking skill that I've utilized. Here's what I did....

Step 1 - Form a clan with some active nexuiz players
Step 2 - Create a private nexuiz server (or multiple servers, in my case)
Step 3 - Find other semi-active clans and try to get them more active
Step 4 - Find some semi-active players and try to get them to form clans
Step 5 - Keep inviting people from public servers into this little private community
Step 7 - Train and practice a lot with all of the above
Step 8 - Do a lot of pickup matches to keep everyone busy and interested
Step 9 - Try to get more people from the mini community to pool together effort
Step 10 - Basically, I keep trying to talk people into stuff :-) such as trying to instigate clan matches or get another clan to work on their communication binds or strategy. I'll suggest whatever I think will help the little community grow and keep active. A lot of times, all people need is a small push to get them to do something.

After getting the ball rolling, the players within the mini-community all help the momentum going. From then on, it just takes doing things to maintain that momentum, and continued efforts to add more players. I've tried to select players from the public servers that have a decent attitude and willingness to learn, because those make the best community members.

You guys in europe have tons of talent and experience, but it seems you're just missing the momentum and organizational factor right now. Yesterday, we had a TDM match with European and US players and it was really fun. Nifrek and I have also played in TDM matches with kojn and red dragon on euro servers and that was enjoyable even with the high ping. I'd be willing to do this regularly to help extend the momentum we have generated in the US scene to the euro scene and create somewhat of a bridge between the two. Right now, it's almost like separate worlds. I think getting euro players to interact more with US players would certainly help US players learn more quickly and a bit of the buzz and momentum that we've recently generated in the US scene could help the euro scene to get active again. I have to say that I appreciate that the euro players were willing to play with high ping in our matches yesterday...especially kojn :-) Thanks for that.
