Grey Players

Postby obi_wan » Sun Apr 23, 2006 10:06 am

I just would suggest to simply suppress the grey colors from the possible colors of the shirt/pants.
After a few months playing nexuiz, it is really clear that Grey/grey marines player are really hard to aim. I also tried to play with a grey/grey marine.... and i was killed really less time than with my red robot model (really more true in minstagib mode).
I suffer of daltonism, so perhaps those are my eyes that dont allow me to see them clearly... that's why i made a poll, just to know who find those grey/grey marines really annoying.
If the crosshair color can be chosen (v1.6), i dont see the point of having the grey as a shirt/pant color.

i don't find them annoying. grey players are lame. everyone with just a bit skill takes the most striking colours, cause he's not a coward 8)

Grey Players suck! And all the other ones trying to get a camouflage by color.

Depending on the map and certain places some color/model combinations almost disappear into the background. I really can't say it doesn't annoy me. Bleh!

yes grey/grey is annoying on maps that are grey. its called camouflage.
similar brown uniforms on brown maps. is camo part of the game?

i think yes. it makes it more interesting. You too can choose which uniform you wear, and character shape, and this can form part of your game.
a bit like camping, or using the Lazer on spacemaps etc etc . For those that use it effectively then its annoying for others.

Does this mean it should be removed as an option. i think no.
this is similar to forcing Glowbright skins so u can see the nme.
or calling for lazer ban on space maps cos it ruins your day being pinged off.

try and look at problems in a new fashion:
ok this bothers me : how can i raise my game to cope with his tactics
rather than
this bothers me: how can limit the opponents game options to bring him down to my level.

final point re grey upsetting your idea of fair play: iirc

Grey map - 18 i think
esteel is bright red, i go in as grey/grey this day & what happens?
i get my arse kicked. go figure : "playing style & ability" or "colour scheme" wins the day
:)

@kern : i understand your opinion : ok it is a part of the game, ok everyone can do it if he wants.

But in my life, i don't like to do to the others what annoys me. So why would i play Grey/Grey if i KNOW that it is annoying for ppl ? There are some (really not a lot) skilled players that play grey/grey... Those one are lamers for me. A nOOb dunno that grey grey is disturbing, and it is normal. But a player that played for a few months know that camouflage sucks. So i don't understand why he does it.
I really prefer to be ppwnd by someone who has a crazy aiming than by someone that kills me because i dont see him.

Try also to see the problem from another angle : if everybody was using camouflage, would the game be the same ?

i see your point and sympathise.

When i played quake 3 fortress i hated the upgrade to "more realistic skins" like on some other games. counterstrike i think, or variants.
i preferred the cartoon types and of course, colours were bold and vivid as my eyesight sucks as well.
to add insult to injury, the improvements also put the game beyond the spec of my PC back then.

but whats the alternative?

only allow uniforms that are primary colours like Red/Blue/Green/Yellow or teamplay and none that coincide with walls, floor or backdrop colours?
almost any combination of subtle colours will blend in somewhere on one map or another.

uniform choice will be irrelevant soon too as some ppl choose to use Fullbright/Superglow clientside. Whatever uniform/camo *you* choose, You will be luminous green to them.

I like challanges so I think it's fun to have camouflage. (I was the one with the fog server and the "ghost-mod"). It makes the game interesting. My eyes are good so theres no prob for me but im sure there are ppl who have to wear glasses or who are colorblind... ... ... i mean people with bad eyes should be able to choose whether to "see" stealth or not.

Edit: An option to adjust the brightness of the players. I would like some black too.

I remember, back in the Quake2 days (When a hardware accelator with four megs of texture memory was state-of-the-art), my buddy in our 1on1 matches would, after I started a map, spend five minutes finding the color combination that was hardest for me to hit. It was annoying. I finally got tired of it and hacked the textures to make his skins really bright, no matter what colors he chose.

I think the solution to the grey skin problem is to have a server go through several maps with different color schemes, and not allow the players to change their colors once they connect to the server. A battleship-grey player is easy to spot on Toxic, for example.

Would be smart, but not allowing players to change colors without reconnecting would be annoying.. maybe let the player change colors but not display the new setting to the other players before map change. but that cuold also be abused.

Players are no longer grey by default in 2.0. So each of the grey players has changed the settings just to annoy you ;)
