Considering the direction that CTF has taken, that could just lead us further down the wrong path. You'll see bad maps with high ratings because there are more people who play CTF like FFA TDM and who rate maps accordingly. Maps that favor the sole captor will also score higher.
Reply to thread in general:
CTF mappers need better guidelines for what makes a good CTF map, but what makes a "good" CTF map varies from person to person. As already noted, there are several love/hate maps and there is no general consensus on what direction CTF playing style should take. I agree with the calls for more team-oriented CTF, but I don't share the belief that some have in teamwork suddenly emerging because a map demands it for a capture. I think that we need more than just maps for that. The scoring system must be changed to focus on the team and to encourage defence. Too many people see the individual score as an indicator of overall team contribution, which it isn't. Great defenders can sometimes have very few frags at the end of a match.
People also need to be encouraged to alter their CTF playing style in general. Too many people just migrate to the enemy base like lemmings as soon as they're spawned. They then spawncamp the flag with no regard for protecting their carrier, defending their flag, or trying to retrieve it. Good teamplay would be several teammates relay-racing the flag back to their base while the rest defend. Attackers would create distractions so others could grab the flag, then protect the carrier, etc.
I agree that map naming needs to be standardized in some legible way... the current alphabet soup system is completely useless. I understand that thumbnails are not currently possible, but they would significantly improve the situation (I was one of the first to say this btw). Perhaps the holy grail of CSQC could do this. According to the hype, it can give me a foot massage while doing quantum cryptography, so a few images shouldn't be too much for it.
For the record, if anyone thinks that CTF teamplay is bad, you should try playing KH, which really does rely on it. If you don't feel the need to beat someone for their utter stupidity after an hour on a public server, you're probably white-listed for canonization.
