Should the default keyboard layout change to something more efficient?

Yes, replace the current weapon binds to keys around WASD

Yes, but leave the 1-9 keys alone and add additional weapon binds around WASD

No, changing the default will be too confusing

Alternative key layouts

Postby Dokujisan » Mon May 19, 2008 3:08 pm

Esteel was recently discussing the idea of having alternative key layouts as options within the Nexuiz config menu, and possibly changing the default keyboard layout.

The primary reason for this is due to the unpopularity of the default key layout (weapons are numbers 1- 9, etc) among intermediate and advanced players. The ideais to help newer players quickly move away from using the defaults (which seem to be a bit inefficient). It seems that many players, if not most, tend to set their weapons binds to the keys around the movement keys (WASD). Some of us even switch our WASD keys to ESDF to free up some more keys to the left of the control keys for more binds. Left-handed players have an even different layout (for example, I know Inficio uses the number pad for movement keys).

So the idea of having some alternative preset keyboard layouts within Nexuiz is on the table.

So the next question is: Which keyboard layouts?

And the question after that: Should the default keyboard layout change away from using 1-9 for weapons? (see poll)

Vote on the poll and also start posting your basic movement and weapons binds, but only if they are different from the default. ;-)

Mine:

Movement: ESDF

Weapons:
Laser: default
Shotgun: default
MG: default
Crylink: default
Hagar: default
Nex : W
RL: T
Mortar: G
Electro: V

I reserve R for hook on the occasion that I join a hook server, otherwise I would use that for another weapon.

I had planned on using A and Q for something, but I haven't yet. I might change hagar/crylink over to those.

Well i'll just try to translate my keyboard layout to esdf:
w - rocket
r - nex
a - electro
g - crylink
numlock - haggar
t - mortar
q - machinegun
c - laser
tab - shotgun (well actually the key left of numlock but there is none :) )

h - drop gun
b - drop key

mouse3 - scoreboard
mouse4 - hook
mouse5 - zoom

Also i think using the 1-0 numbers for team messages is much easier as i use ujhk for movement. so its easily possible to use all of them, unlike wasd or esdf

Here's my current layout: http://www.nexuizninjaz.com/its_a_secre ... inja_binds

Sigh, I need to extend that keyboard layout to include numpad and function keys... then write the GUI to edit layouts.

Maybe after the map repo. Anyone can translate their layout into xml and I'll upload it though, it's pretty straight forward: http://www.nexuizninjaz.com/its_a_secre ... _binds.xml

Back on topic -- I think surrounding the wasd is a more efficient method. There are less slipups, I find it more intuitive and I don't have to lift my hand.

Each time you start the game or want to chat you have to move your hand... thats the point were i really do not get wasd got default in the first place. It seems very unintuitive to me. But i think now we'll have to live with it..
