alt map names for map voting

Postby Dokujisan » Sun Jun 29, 2008 9:41 pm

There are many good maps that don't get voted on (I think) because they have cryptic names that people don't remember (including me). The idea of putting thumbnails on the map voting list has been brought up before, but there are technical issued getting in the way of that. So, in the meantime, I was wondering if we (the server admins) could have a way to add our own alternative map names to plug into the map voting list.

for example, the recent Q3 conversion maps that strahlemann made

http://forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=3339

Great maps, but I notice people don't select them very often. That one linked above is called "Lucid Enigma" but the file name is "dubenigma_nex_r1" and that is what appears on the map voting list. If it were called Lucid Enigman in the voting list (perhaps with the map filename in parenthesis) people might remember the map more easily.

Other examples...

mapname: "Scrap Metal" (very easy to remember)
filename : Bal3dm4_nex_r1 (wha?)
http://forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=3335

mapname: "kritische masse" (ok)
filename: cht3_nex_r1 (ehh?)
http://forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=3318

mapname: Rocky Rampage
filename: ctctf6_nex_r2 (ct?)
http://forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=3321

So what do you think? Maybe a command like this to add to the config?

mapname ctctf6_nex_r2 "Rocky Rampage"
mapname cht3_nex_r1 "kritische masse"

Put those in a separate mapnames.cfg that you could exec from the main cfg?

mapinfos have proper map titles... I'd vote to use those. The problem is that some maps don't have that :/

Yup, I like that idea.
I'd definitely vote for a DM-Agony instead of dm_kljashdlkajshd5235_r2

I'd stick with morfars idea. Your idea is a good temporary solution but ultimately, that wouldn't last the long run. Cause it would mean all the server admins had to agree on one and the same name for each map, or share the .cfg file, install and use it.
I just don't think all the server admins would do that (lazy, don't have time, don't care etc.). So morfars idea to use the mapinfo thing would be prio 1, however, if possible you could use the .cfg if the map doesn't have a name in the mapinfo field.

Too much work, really.

Many mapinfos for pre-2.4 maps contain placeholder names, like:

data/maps/transr.mapinfo:title <TITLE>

That is because the mappers did not set ANY title at all.

Also, often, the titles are out of date when people change a map:

data/maps/Eyecancer_CTF.mapinfo:title Spaceplates

Do you really want to show THESE names?

First, someone would have to fix all the mapinfo files for the pre-2.4 maps. Then we can think about showing the map names there.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

When you say too much work, do you mean to program? Or to add the mapnames?

Some have already worked on collecting information on maps, going through the maps to collect all of the info for them to generate mapinfos for maps that didn't have them. http://www.nexuizninjaz.com/forum/showt ... hp?tid=264

If it came to entering info into a cfg file, as a server admin, I would be willing to go through all of the maps that I put on my own server to enter proper map names for them. If another admin took value in my list of mapnames, then I would give them my cfg file with the mapnames defined.
