Eee PC performance resolved

Eee PC owners, you can now play Nexuiz!

In this mode, I get 20 to 30 fps on the Eee PC 4G at the full 800x480 resolution (at defaults, I get about 2 fps). That's just playable, actually...
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Not that I own àm eee,but I'd happily blog about this at the Hungarian Unix Portal :D

Nice stuff. I thought Nexuiz would have been more playable than that on an Eee without all of the hacks. Which spec is yours? Is it Atom based?

I'm very tempted to buy an Eee or similar but I just think it needs to be 'good enough' which may limit the choice. Nexuiz would be nice.

I do like r_showsurfaces 3 though, so much less confusing than r_showsurfaces 1.

This will be my default mode even not in eee. Looks very nice and clean (me likes minimalism).

No, it's the smallest eeepc, not Atom-based and 4GB solid state disk. The Atom based ones SHOULD be faster, and maybe even run at low.cfg.

BTW:

r_showsurfaces 3
r_fullbright 1

Looks like sw_drawflat in Quake 2 :P

The Atom based ones do have a much faster core but the Atom chip is slower per clock than the Celeron, so it's not as much faster as the tripling of clock speed might suggest.

What does make a difference is the graphics chipset. All of the 700 based models use the GMA900 whereas the 900 and 1000 models use the GMA950. This runs 20% higher clock speed and has other improvements so you might get twice the rendering speed out of it. I used a GMA950 based Core 2 Duo laptop with Nexuiz on low-medium details OK so low might be OK.

What I'm waiting for is one with a GMA X3100 or more recent chipset, these are still over 2 years old though! This would bring hardware transform and lighting, better hardware decoding and shaders.

Now all we need is black edges around everything, and we have a Warsow clone!

/me runs fast.

In an EeePC? The TDP of the GMA X3xxx series, even the GM965 laptop chip at 13.5W, is over three times that of an Atom CPU...
