The new version is awesome!

Postby eiver » Fri Apr 10, 2009 11:32 am

Welcome all!

I am new to this forum. I have played Nexuiz for some time now, but the 2.5 release has stunned me. I just couldn't stop myself to register on the forums and share my opinion. It is absolutely completely awesome. I feel like I am inside the game world when I am playing. The controls now respond truly real-time and I feel I have complete control. (as opposed to earlier version where I experienced a noticeable delay). Everything is absolutely great. Game is great. Gui is great. Weapon balance is great. It is wonderful to see how advanced and polished an open source game can be. I only have a small issue with sound going silent after a longer play (but thats probably due to some bug in my Linux distribution).
Anyway I love the new Nexuiz and I hope development will continue to make the game even more awesome.

Actually I've experienced the sound bug as well. It seems to be something server side, since every other player in the game had it at the same time.

Anyway, welcome to the forum! Happy nexing!

Welcome! Glad you enjoy the game so much.

I'm not sure about the sound bug, i'm on linux too but never had that problem. However there seems to be a know and hopefully already fixed problem with PacketLoss. Well we are not yet sure its really fixed but that might help with that problem (in 2.5.1 or some of the development servers)

I am on Ubuntu 8.10 and when I keep PulseAudio running when playing Nexuiz my sound will also stop after a while and I have to restart the game (after doing 'killall pulseaudio' of course, because I should have done that before I started the game). PulseAudio will also cause small delays in the sounds and the game as a whole for me. So if you have PulseAudio this might be worth looking into.

Oh and welcome to the forum of course :)

Maybe you'll have better luck with Ubuntu 9.04 when that comes out, I haven't had any sound issues at all with the 9.04 Beta. PulseAudio is also running. So either I'm lucky or PulseAudio got some fixes.

Dito, here. Seems like jaunty has a stable pulseaudio thingy going. Even though I pipe/swap sound output between two soundcards and yadda yadda, it works fine and doesnt die on me, like it did with Intrepid. :)

Damage disparity

Postby ICEBIKE » Sat Apr 18, 2009 8:50 pm

The new 2.5 version seems to have greater damage disparity than the old version.

Let me explain...

Due to my internet connection lameness, I play against bots a lot. (New bot route seeking code is WAY better than the old, by the way).

However in my tests, I've found that if you spawn in front of a bot and try to shoot it out (no running or dodging) with the default weapon you die 99.999% of the time. The bots weapon does greater damage (at any skill level) OR the bot weapon fires faster. I can't tell which.

Theoretically, you should win 50% of such face-offs, when neither opponent takes evasive action.

Now it could just be that I suck beyond all that is reasonable.

But I have been playing FPS games since dirt, and this issue seemed more balanced in prior versions.

I've never noticed that a bot would do more damage than I could. Maybe the spread of the shotgun makes you hit less than maximum, and somehow the bot hits with all pellets?
