As it turns out, yesterday I was looking around to see if I could get some cool old Quake deathmatch maps to play against my friend. Well, I noticed Nexuiz had a new release on Digg, so I decided to download Nexuiz instead. I was up late practicing against the bots.
When I showed this game to my friend today, he was also very impressed. He really thought the graphics were beautiful, and greatly enjoyed the classic deathmatch gameplay. Like many real-world computers, we had to considerably lower the amount of detail to get a decent FPS (frames per second) in the game.
The bots are very difficult to defeat unless we really lower their skill level; I don't think people are going to complain that the Nexuiz 2.0 bots are too easy to kill. We had a lot of fun having bots in the deathmatch maps; they add a lot of fun to the game.
It was very easy to set up a server, and even very easy to find servers on the internet. I also liked all of the flexibility one can have with the rules of the game and the weapons.
One thing we missed was a co-op mode, where multiple humans team up against multiple bots in team DM; this would have been a welcome break from killing each other.
Naturally, more DM maps would be nice. Like hard disk space and memory, DM maps is just something you can't have too much of. 20 classic deathmatch maps is a lot of maps, but having one or two hundred more high-quality maps would be nice. Of course, I have faith that there will be a rigourous QA process only allowing the best maps to be part of Nexuiz--anyone that remembers cdrom.com and the quality (or lack thereof) of a lot of their maps knows what I am talking about.
