We really liked Nexuiz!

Postby samiam » Fri Jun 16, 2006 10:38 am

As it turns out, yesterday I was looking around to see if I could get some cool old Quake deathmatch maps to play against my friend. Well, I noticed Nexuiz had a new release on Digg, so I decided to download Nexuiz instead. I was up late practicing against the bots.

When I showed this game to my friend today, he was also very impressed. He really thought the graphics were beautiful, and greatly enjoyed the classic deathmatch gameplay. Like many real-world computers, we had to considerably lower the amount of detail to get a decent FPS (frames per second) in the game.

The bots are very difficult to defeat unless we really lower their skill level; I don't think people are going to complain that the Nexuiz 2.0 bots are too easy to kill. We had a lot of fun having bots in the deathmatch maps; they add a lot of fun to the game.

It was very easy to set up a server, and even very easy to find servers on the internet. I also liked all of the flexibility one can have with the rules of the game and the weapons.

One thing we missed was a co-op mode, where multiple humans team up against multiple bots in team DM; this would have been a welcome break from killing each other.

Naturally, more DM maps would be nice. Like hard disk space and memory, DM maps is just something you can't have too much of. 20 classic deathmatch maps is a lot of maps, but having one or two hundred more high-quality maps would be nice. Of course, I have faith that there will be a rigourous QA process only allowing the best maps to be part of Nexuiz--anyone that remembers cdrom.com and the quality (or lack thereof) of a lot of their maps knows what I am talking about.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the great feedback, I know for sure that the developers really apprechiate it after all the hard work. Have fun playing, and We'll see you in-game. :)

btw: If you want too, feel free to start mapping yourself to add your own maps and style to the game, this community will always be helpful with technical stuff, and you will also find some server willing to house your maps. fresh blood is always welcome.

Edit: another thing:
Nexuiz is capable for running maps from a lot of other games.. likeQ3 and stuff, I also think there at some point was made a system that made it possible to play CS maps directly in nexuiz., so you hould be able to play plenty of maps if you wish.

sooooo.. tell me what you want, waht you really-really want
I will proceed directly to the intravenous injection of hard drugs, please.

OK, there are enough maps

OK, it's possible to play Quake 3 maps with Nexuiz, so we get the hundreds of Q3 maps that are out there. Nice. :-)

The unmodificed Q3 maps won't show up on the list, but can be opened by putting the .pk3 in nexuiz/data (err, nexuiz\data for Windows users) and typing in, at the console (shift + esc), "Map mapname".

I also downloaded the maps at
http://user.uni-frankfurt.de/~jsiegl/ and made a mirror of these maps at http://www.samiam.org/nexuiz. The quality of maps is uneven; there are a few maps which remind me of a lot of the kind of stuff that used to show up at cdrom.com, but there are also quite a few excellent maps which would make good additions to the next release of Nexuiz once routes for the bots are added.

Nexuiz uses an different (hopefully) more flexible way of loading maps now that why the Q3 maps do not show up in the dialog.. If you read the server setup thread in this forum the Nexuiz mechanism is explained a bit.
And well yeah those are custom maps and you can see the different level of work and time someone invested in the maps :)
