Thoughts about 2.4/2.5 changes

Postby Waterlaz » Tue Jun 09, 2009 1:55 pm

Time passed and I got pretty used to 2.5. But yesturday I've launched my old svn pre 2.5 server and played a few ctf and dm games.
Well then I've updated my server to resent SVN and... the grass was greener.
1) Ping grown almost twice (and the only thing that stands betwean me and my server is the 20m lan cable)
2) The old physics were much more smoother. And that's not only the case for ctf. DM feels much better the old way.
3) The overall feel of the game was better

So here it is. Maybe we should think about reverting some changes?

2) Physics were not smoother in my oppinion (read all the complaints on ESReality from 2.4/2.4.2 release on movement compared to nexuiz 2.5 release), they were harder to turn, and less control..slightly faster for some people and slower for others ( like myself )

Seems to me the problem seems to be people don't know how to accelerate quickly from the go with them (circle jump)

Sorry but I'm going to go ahead and say 2.5+ is far superior than 2.4 ever was. 2.4 was the beginning steps of separation in server side and client side code. New effects just started making it in as well as the epic new scoreboard. Some of the models and maps were lacking and the physics weren't _that_ great.

No idea why your ping was higher and I have no idea why you think the 'overall feel' was better.

With new features like fruitiex's new HUD and mand1nga's awesome bots that divVerent was able to script to the the %@*'n tuba. There is no turning back for me.

Also, the menu system is far more mature.

2.5.svn is continually getting better and better.

1) Perhaps 2.4.2 shows a screwed up ping due to a bad way of calculating it, which was changed in 2.5?

Did you try on a server which is not in your LAN? Going from 10 ms to 20 ms on a local server won't be noticeable at all anyway, and there is no reason to care about that unless the ping on online servers also gets worse (not the case for me at least)

2) Start circle-strafing, as kojn said. Normal strafejumping is impossible when going faster than 600-650 qu/s, and will in fact only slow you down.

3) IMO the overall feel of the game gets better and better for each release. Consistency increases, even though we constantly get a bunch of cool new features and fixes.

That's not the problem... the feel of the movement isn't good for me...

I do not argue that. And do not suggest to throw away 2.5. I'm just saying that not all changes were for the good.

Sounds to me like you don't like the physics is all.

for 2.4.2 physics:

exec physicsQBR.cfg

but as kojn says, you just need to learn how to move differently.

circle strafing is easier with cl_rollangle in the adv. options.
