Nexuiz n00b here . . .

Postby Therealxebbo » Sun Jun 28, 2009 8:55 am

Hi just started playing Nexuiz today, for a free game is pretty ace!

Just wondering if anyone who plays on a laptop can tell me how they have their keys set up to accommodate the touchpad. I've not tried playing with a mouse yet but I'm guessing its a lot more comfortable to play (I've got a mouse SOMEwhere, I just can't find it...) but it doesn't seem to matter how I have the keys set up using a touchpad the game seems really awkward to play.

I'm a bit of a 3D shooter n00b in general, but would appreciate any suggestions on how I could set up my keyboard/touchpad on my laptop for a better experience!

Xebbo.

I'd recommend you to get a mouse, because it's impossible to aim well and turn fast enough etc with a touchpad. I play on a laptop too, but always carry a mouse with me. :)

Oh and, welcome to Nexuiz! ;)

welcome to nexuiz. First of all, yes, using a mouse plays better then with touchpad.

I was a FPS noob too, but 1.5 years and you will be used to it :P. I would recommend using youtube movies for movement.

this will help you with movement.

if you can afford gaming mice, get a razer one, they are extremely accurate. :P also if you want to eliminate that "blurry" mouse movement that happens in many cases, go to the video settings menu and tick "force gpu to finish frame" or sth like that, it will decrease your fps a little but its a key setting to improve your accuracy and mouse movements. If you want to improve fast, i recommend to spectate good players to see what tactics and movement tricks they are using ;) also if you have serious fps issues in big fights, its useful to turn off gibs in the settings menu, the exploding corpses are the main reason in many cases why some people having fps drops.

Pfft you dont need a gaming mouse

Get a Logitech RX1000, its the cheapest laser mouse I could find and its just as good. Only cost me £10.
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

I will get a laser mouse from work, there's a load of old IT hardware stuff in a big a metal locker at work, most of which probably needs throwing out. There MUST be one in there.

I'll also be unemployed in three weeks when my contract ends so I need to save as much money as I can to tide me over, as I've been unable to get another job. :( Buying a cool gaming mouse would be nice, but can't really warrant it at the moment.

In case you have to buy a new mouse: As you can see here, other people even prefer cheap normal mice.

Once I got myself a Raptor M2 Gaming Mouse. It was the worst piece of crap I ever had, and I'm back to normal Logitech mice.

Another remark: You might consider using an external keyboard. It will not only provide a better usage, but it might also prevent your notebook keyboard from breaking, which will be expensive (had that already, don't want it again(*)).

(*) new internal keyboard: 150 Euro, doing the work myself of course.
