Sure, the system itself seems dumb, but why would it be dumb to use it? What's the advantage for most americans to switch to SI units?
I don't think it is very convenient when:
12 inches = 1 foot
3 feet = 1 yard
220 yards = 1 furlong
8 furlongs = 1 mile
3 miles = 1 league
Perhaps this one is more convenient:
10 mm = 1 cm
100 cm = 1 m
1000 m = 1 km
