IP connections while playing

Postby Vordreller » Sat Aug 08, 2009 4:48 pm

Recently, I installed a program called peerblock. It's purpose is to prevent the sending of data to know IP addresses and/or organisations which might want to collect data on me.

Offcourse, in some cases I want the data to be collected or the block is based on the IP address beloging to a school(for instance).

So I started nexuiz and this is what I got as "blocked" IP's and I'm wondering if anyone here recognises any of them. If so, please let me know which ones are safe and which ones aren't.

if you put nexuiz in window mode, then try to connect to servers you should see in the log what ip's you should unblock and put in your allow list.

What you see here are some Nexuiz servers.

On startup, Nexuiz queries all servers on the master server list to get info like name, players etc. on the server.

Thus, the connection pattern is:

1. one packet to each master server (there's three, or maybe four of them), port 27950
2. multi-packet replies from each master server
3. one packet to each IP in the combined list from the master servers (typically to port 26000)
4. zero or one reply from each such IP

The hosts you blocked are blocked because they are Nexuiz servers hosted in different universities. Feel free to block them, but these ARE servers you might want to play on. As Nexuiz is a GAME, it is played by STUDENTS too. And some students simply are hosting servers at their university... nobody is trying to collect data on you there.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Actually, they're blocked because they're on a pre-made list by the software developper. I can allow individual IP's myself, but I didn't put them on the list to begin with.

Also, I can play every single server just fine, which is why I thought that something else was happening here.

You cannot play "every single server" fine - but the servers blocked by your software don't even appear in the server list of the game, because their getstatus attempt never succeeds.

Still, the biggest servers do appear.
-All the DCC servers
-All the Simba servers
-Veterans
-nexian

and a couple more.

I'm sure ALL Nexuiz servers are SAFE. Some are hosted on universities iirc, and are blocked.
I used that software before, under the old name peerguardian, but dunno why they block schools :P
