As mentioned earlier tags enclosed in { } aren't really Clans but communities or federations. i.e. Loosely affiliated groups of players who share similarities (like my permatag, {GLBT}, though I have been and will always be clanless).
Clans are usually enclosed in [ ], though some nowadays don't enclose it at all and just use something distinctive, like coloration or a prefix word.
As for old school... 2.3 <3 and Galt's Forever!!! The time when clans were springing up everywhere, when people played for the company rather than for the scores.
*sigh* Nexuiz is so unfriendly these days though. Even Nadz fails to bring the players together in the way XSAX did with us.
P.S. As for taunts. One thing that kinda shocked me when I picked up Nexuiz again after a year was a certain taunt - 'Pussy!'. Never liked it. We do have female players and we do have players aged 12 or less. Another thing lacking in current Nexuiz - active masters. Public servers used to have legions of masters who take good care not to let any one player start fouling up the place. Nowadays you just have to grin and bear and be 'man enough'. Sadly that's not enough. I guess it's because most of the old trusted players are now playing in private clan servers.
