Now 2.5 contains a perversive cocktail of disrespect, from minor aspects such as the phrasing used to log frags, to automated taunts intended to incite animosity.

I have not seen anyone say 'GG' these days, even [PB] has changed to a point where /b/-style random disruption has taken precedence over the Peace, and therefore are unable to form players towers from anything but clones...

As disrespect was developed gradually, building new respect will take time and effort.

Agreed, in fact, I think just removing the taunts and such won't be enough, I think we need to do a little bit more to reverse the problems.

I dont see autotaunts etc. as a problem. I find them quite entertaining.

The game is a fairly violent shooter, why bother wrapping that in ribbons and cotton. If people want to disable profane taunts etc. it should be a menu option just like the ability to turn off blood/gibs.

Ditto.

You folks have lived a sheltered life indeed if you think the Nexuiz community is anything short of care bears with a candy arsenal.

Just go play Tremulous for an hour or post on its forums, you'll cry blood.

Meh, just case other projects are worse doesn't mean we can't improve things. Even if it's bearable now, it could get worse, and catching this early is essential to stopping the behavior from becoming an epidemic.

Wait are you implying that any poor behaviour of players in general is stemming from the fact that there are autotaunts etc. in the game?

Come on.... really?

I know it seems stupid, but the context has a lot more to do with behavior then you think:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fixing_Broken_Windows wrote:“Consider a building with a few broken windows. If the windows are not repaired, the tendency is for vandals to break a few more windows. Eventually, they may even break into the building, and if it's unoccupied, perhaps become squatters or light fires inside.

Or consider a sidewalk. Some litter accumulates. Soon, more litter accumulates. Eventually, people even start leaving bags of trash from take-out restaurants there or breaking into cars.”

A successful strategy for preventing vandalism, say the book's authors, is to fix the problems when they are small. Repair the broken windows within a short time, say, a day or a week, and the tendency is that vandals are much less likely to break more windows or do further damage. Clean up the sidewalk every day, and the tendency is for litter not to accumulate (or for the rate of littering to be much less). Problems do not escalate and thus respectable residents do not flee a neighborhood.

The theory thus makes two major claims: that further petty crime and low-level anti-social behavior will be deterred, and that major crime will, as a result, be prevented. Criticism of the theory has tended to focus only on the latter claim.

In this scenario, the broken windows are the little things in the game; the taunts, swearing, etc.

I believe these statements epitome the mindset of players that do not consider Nexuiz as anything more than yet another shooter.

Such players certainly have not experienced every definition of Nexuiz, from Minstagib DM to Herforst CTF, from Nexball to tower-building, from tZork's Zany mod to Dresk's Spidflisk rebalance.

Nexuiz has changed so much from 1.0->1.2.1 w/ gamemode patch->1.5 w/ true-aim->2.0 w/ air-control, entirely revamped interface and balancing-> 2.1 w/ teamplay support now taken for granted, etc.

However, every single person who persisted through the many, many versions of Nexuiz, did so and continue do so because of this unique, multinational, FOSS project's most friendly community on the internet.

Really? It makes me sad you are trying to discredit my opinion with such a fickle statement.

I've played nexuiz for many years, I couldn't say how many but a lot of it has been on and off. I started getting interested in the community and made this forum account. Then I eventually began to give back to the community with my mapping.

No, sadly I wasn't around for all your glory days on the Herforst CTF server but maybe you should stop living in the past and look to the future. I know there is a lot of very interesting stuff in development at the moment from vehicles to the possiblity of a singleplayer campaign and more. I'm really looking forward to playing with all this stuff and grateful to those who work on it.

A little friendly taunting in the game is hardly going to knock it down when we have a nice, already mature community that is able to discuss these things in the open and promote its positive influence.

As to this broken window thing I really don't see its application to a game. Players are players, the majority don't just sit and play Nexuiz all the time. A lot of smacktardery is imported from other games. That and some people are just asshats.

If people want to be able to turn off little bits of the game then thats fine but I don't want it ruining my gib covered, blood and cursing filled fun fest. Heck, I don't even care if you have this stuff turned off by default as long as it can be enabled.

meh, I guess it's a complex issue. It's possible that the people running the servers are at fault for not monitoring the conversations in the server, but I'm not exactly sure.

I think the communities seem to vary slightly between countries. You are right though it is something complex to combat. Maybe the time of trying to be nice to everyone on the internet has just run out and we should accept a flaming trolling chaotic future

In terms of people not saying GG etc. I think a lot of it is just due to new players not knowing the etiquette or others choosing to ignore it completely. Many of the latter are unfixable.
