What makes for a good match? (saying GG at the end)

Postby Dokujisan » Wed Sep 02, 2009 6:37 pm

I've seen this many times now, where various players at the end of a pretty bad match will say "gg" as naturally as they are breathing, like it doesn't mean anything.

I, personally, don't enjoy matches that are one-sided, even if I'm on the winning team. I like matches that are competitive. Those are enjoyable. Those are good games. I've had this discussion numerous times with people and it appears to be pretty universal that a "good game" would require that the match is balanced enough to be competitive.

I've been playing recently on Euro servers (mainly DCC Laid back delight) during the daytime here when I take breaks from working. Team balance is always a problem on public servers, but it appears to be far WORSE of a problem on DCC laid back delight. I just played 6 matches today and 4 of them were off balance with resulting scores like 9-1, 10-2, 8-0 and such. 2 of the matches had an unbalanced number of players on the winning team, but also the skill level of the teams was unbalanced.

So, I don't say "gg" at the end of bad games. I just don't do it. I don't think it's polite to be untruthful. I just don't say anything, or I make a comment about the match being unbalanced, with the hopes that people will pay more attention to that in future matches.

I'm half venting here and half asking for feedback. This is an issue in Nexuiz that I've complained about from 2.5 years ago or whenever I first started playing Nexuiz. So I don't expect it to be "fixed" anytime soon.

DCC has had that problem for quite some time... I'm not really sure why.
I usually join it out of desperation (no other server available), and leave in frustration. Ugh.

And yeah, I "gg" when there is actually competition, and I felt I had to make an effort to try to win. But when it gets too competitive (as in, noone playing for fun), then it's as bad as an unbalanced game, really.
Meh.

it's nothing but a formality, just like if a little league game ended up as a lopsided win, the teams would still do the lining up to say gg

For me a good game constitutes both a balance math, and somewhat decent playing myself. I guess I'm too frustrated to say gg when I was playing like shit.

On a related note, we've notice the same kind of unbalance at Simba - and our answer was to be more actively watch the teams and correct people who join the winning team on purpose. We're actually in the process of automating this as much as possible (in a more sane way than g_balance_teams_force).

Also a while back we dramatically lowered the nex damage, and thanks to Spaceman we've been running stats on our server logs - and it turned out that matches got WAY more balanced after this change. I don't have the numbers handy, but the numbers got far better on monthly averages - also we used this to get rid of maps that were doomed to be unbalanced (for example eggandbacon).

well, since I started out playing in December, (soon a year now) in the first place and being a noob back then, everything was "gg".
Except those times (loads) when "normal" players just ran me over like a freight train.

Basically, I just started saying "gg", if I felt I myself did all right.
I still stick with that rule. However, I on the other hand often just use the laser or cl_handicap 2 or more.
So its on the same level sort of, when I play against players with my own skill level, back in December - March, especially over at DCC Beginners.
Of course, if I notice someone really made an effort to put me down, I also say "gg". It's that kind of balance I try to keep any ways.

I say "gg" in honour of the polygonic men who left their virtual lives in battle. It's about respect. Respect toward those who won, respect to those who lost, and respect toward those who respect the code. By saying "gg" i thank those who helped me win or those who helped me learn something by defeating me. If a game was exceptionally satisfying i take my time to say "Good Game!" to show that i care enough to write it out.

basically the longwinded version of what i said, boils down to nothing but a formality/good sportsmanship
