Protected gameplay and free spectating

I need...

A way to password protect the for joining a game, but allowing whoever to spectate it.

Prefferably different settings for total nr of spectators and total mr of players, and different password settings for spectators and players.

Its not currently possible..
The development version of DarkPlaces (engine) now got QuakeWorld support, including rcon.. didn't QW have a password feature too? So you could only join if you had the password? Not exactly what you want but its a start.. However i'm not sure how complete this QW support is!

Not quite true... you could do that in qc (especially if anyone shall be allowed to spectate)

Ähm.. yeah thats more or less what i mean.. one could use things similar to cl_autoswitch to get the password and if it matches toggle a flag so that the user is allowed to play.. But there is no such feature currently. Sorry for being unclear.
I think having the engines maxplayers feature and a another cvar controlling how many people can actually play would be nice.. would also be a necessary thing to get a real 1on1 game mode.. only two players can play at a time, the others can watch.. the one that looses gets to the bottom of the players list and the next one can play..

Ok, so you volunteer for that job? Great! :P

LordHavoc already added a todo item for kinda thing:
need a rocketarena-like mode - lms is cool but not the same (rocket arena has a challenger and a champion, whoever loses is replaced by another challenger from spectator group)

Well i really would like to do some redesigning first.. For example the whole game-modes code is a mess.. added a few things here.. an other thing added there.. Maybe the initGameMode function in teamplay.c could be used as a central point for the actuall setup. But first i need more spare time.. guess you noticed i did not do very much for 1.5.1 so i feel bad suggestion all this work..

This ass sounds good. The background for my request is for compos at computer parties, where we have few players, and good net. It would make things a lot easier if the players for each game could be provided with a password to play, and everyone, that wanted could spectate.

Or otherwise one person could spectater for the big screen, but then the spectationg info should go away. Is it possible to remove all text info in spectator mode too?

That's quite easy to do, just set:

scr_centertime 0
con_notify 0

on the spectator client. That will disable all "X was blasted by Y" messages and all centerprints. If you want to disable the scoreboard too, use
Code: Select all
cl_deathscoreboard 0
(you can still bring it up by pressing tab)
