This entire saga makes me incredibly sad. While I didn't always see eye-to-eye on all philosophies regarding the game, watching what has unfolded over the last two days is absolutely heartbreaking to see.

@Jal - I'm surprised to hear this from you. I don't think you'd feel the same way if Solomonk made the same kind of deal without consulting you about it. I also think your community would react far more harshly than this one, given their history.

I would stop referring to the original Nexuiz as "GPL Nexuiz", and continue to call it "Nexuiz". Make them feel the burden to change the name to avoid confusion. You guys have the notoriety of name, people associate it with *this* game, that is precisely why they want the name so badly. If you guys continue to just refer to your game as "Nexuiz", trust me, people will start referring to the console version as "Console Nexuiz", if they haven't started already.

jal: I really hope you haven't read the rest of this. NONE of the actual developers (apart from LordHavoc) have agreed to this deal, or even were informed about its details.

It IS good that a commercial product is being made of this. It is BAD that it is behind the backs of those who did the actual work.

I read a good bunch of it, yup. But I have to admit I didn't follow the changes in the devteam over the time, so the Nexuiz developers I know the most (apart of you) are from the original creators (Y'know, Vermeulen, markeimen, LH), and they seem to be fairly represented in that studio. I've read until now a lot of user rage, but that's something I expect to happen in a situation like this. I didn't know you were also feeling bad about this situation. That changes my perception of the facts.

But even with that change, I can't wish them anything else than good luck. No matter how badly done this move was (and it's clear it was badly done), because I know them from a long time ago and I know they are good guys trying to make something out of what they like over anything else. And I'm also convinced Nexuiz will sooner or later get something in return, because, let's not ignore this, they are the ones who gave out Nexuiz to the comunity the first time.

This is akin to having a child, disappearing from their life for at an early age, leaving them in a foster home and later coming back into their life after they've matured to kidnap and sell them into slavery without even consulting with the foster parents.

If this is the sort of person that gains respect in the quake community, then it is not a community I want to be part of.

Maybe we should audit the paypal donations that have gone into Vermeulen's pocket for the past 4 years without a developer seeing a dime.

You won't catch me holding my breath waiting for Lee to give back.

Oh geez...
If I'm not mistaken, the first offers went for the master servers

C.Brutali: they are going to take over our master list servers? I guess they'll kick off all our "old nexuiz" servers. I'm sure they'll kick off mine.

Ok, we need to make sure that in our gpl nexuiz we make some sort of distributed system (in addition to known list servers) so a takeover can never happen there.

Perhaps this will change the tune of those few who are pro-ultra-centralized control (the peeps that were fine with the idea because it would mean my server being easily banned... because they don't like what I have to say.)

No, Mikee. There are 3 servers each controlled by a different person, and the master servers are already used by some other compatible games like warsaw and openarena.

Although I know that I am not a part of this project and forum that much (the International Baccalaureate program takes a lot of time to do) I can see that over the past few days very significant events have been occurring. I often visit the Nexuiz sites daily in appreciation of the new features and the strong potential this project has (I am also anticipating in the launch of 2.5.3, hope it comes out soon). However, I am greatly shocked by the possible disaster that could be afflicted onto this hard worked and beautiful project if we handle this badly. It can really go either way. What I believe we must do is set an example as you guys are the original and living essence of this project and show the world that an free project and a derived commercial one can work together in a way which benefits both parties. I would hate to see this project all go to waste and I would be forced to buy the version of this because the real, original version died out. Best wishes to this project and I hope that Nexiuz, the real, original, free one will not go to waste after all those years of hard work. :)

I am trying to not respond to every post here, but again I need to respond to this.
I have been open with donations to a number of Nexuiz developers. Over year it's been around $100-$200 in total. I've given the recent list to div0 and Lordhavoc and offered a fundraiser for div0 and for div0 to take over donations. There have been no donations in the last 2 months. If you have personal issues with me you can discuss that with me on IRC or by email.

And, like I said on the main Alientrap page in the news, is that the percentage on royalties will be open to Nexuiz developers. And that this money will go towards helping further Nexuiz/other open source project development.
