Thoughts about 2.0

Postby Workaphobia » Mon Jul 24, 2006 5:20 pm

I used to play Nexuiz 1.5 quite a bit, mostly on the (now closed) Stormix and Fragtory servers. I'm not too happy with 2.0, for two critical reasons. The first is that I hate the new movement physics compared to the original fast-paced style that set Nexuiz apart from other FPSs. I miss the slow acceleration / high velocity settings - although I do feel that at least the weapons are more balanced now. The other major problem is that there are no American servers anymore - except for All Out War, whose non-standard configuration has always made me a little dizzy, and a couple of ladder servers.

I think it's a real shame that a game I used to have so much fun with has died with a fizzle. If anyone happens to have handy a configuration file to make 2.0 movement feel like 1.5, I'd probably like to use that for lan games. Increasing sv_maxspeed and sv_maxairspeed by 50 or 100, and decreasing sv_airaccelerate a little seems to make a huge difference - are there any other settings I should look at?

Unless / until a low lag server opens up, I'll probably still play a few minutes on a European server every now and then, but I get the feeling that there's no going back to the good old days of 1.5 on Fragtory.

Maybe you could ask Willis to change on e of those to standard DM or another gametype...

Just add "exec physics15.cfg" to your server.cfg, that's as close as you can get to 1.5 physics.

I've been playing Screaming Eagle a lot lately, and that's a nice low ping server. I don't know if it's US-based, but with a playable ping for me (I'm in Ohio), I'd assume so, and it's just using the standard server config.

I dunno, I've gotten more into the game since 2.0, and have actually been able to convince my friends to play with it too - the fact that it's much more easily playable with the performance boosts coming from 1.5 which ran pretty poorly all-around by comparison. I dunno, I wouldn't be surprised to see someone set up a 1.5 physics server to appeal to people who preferred that style of gameplay.

Thanks! I didn't realize that script existed, but it sure came in handy.

Screaming Eagle does indeed have a low ping for me. I guess I'll just have to wait till I see some people on it.

Performance wise, 2.0 just feels kinda sluggish - maybe because of the combination of the slower physics, lag, and graphics. Although I should really try it under windows before I complain, as I do remember Nexuiz <2.0 performing much better on my XP laptop than on my linux (GeForce 6200) desktop.

Yeah I know what you're talking about, but this isnt really true. You only have such an impression for the first few hours until u get used to the new movement, which is really cool then. :)

Air control? Still sucks for me, although I can handle it. I just dont like it :P

Thats very strange.. Nexuiz 2.0 has the best prediction and fastes graphics from all releases sofar and there have been a few threads praising the new graphic speed. Maybe its just that there are less good servers for you but that would really be a shame.
I use a nv6600gt and would say that linux is at least equal to windows in speed. If not a bit faster.
Also i do not really see how Nexuiz 2.0 is slower in movement speed then old versions. I can even prove with some demos :)
