Virtual Nexuiz Server ?

Hi,

as long as several free virtual Server Solutions are available now (VMWare, MS, etc) did anybody tried to setup for example a VMWare-Linux-Nexuiz-Server? This would help for non-so-technical-guys like me to give a Nexuiz Server a try.

VMWare isn't free and cannot be distributed together with Nexuiz for licensing reasons.

One could use qemu for that - but one question: why? The dedicated server also runs on Windows directly. Run nexuiz-dedicated.exe and you HAVE your server... all you need to set is hostname and g_maplist to get started.

There is a 'free' vmware-player available. It can run prebuilt vms, but cannot change their options. Youll either need vmware-workstation or other third-party tools which can construct a vmx-file which describes the hardware of a vm - and a tool to create a virtual disk image - for example quemu.
So, I think the question here is, would it make sense to create a virtual disk image that runs a Nexuiz-server out of the box, for either quemu, vmware or some other vm.
I personally prefer to run my servers on real hardware - since my machines dont have any virtualization hardware built in
I would say a goold HOWTO, FAQ, ... and a good example config with lots of comments would make more sense here and would enable the "not so technical" guys to also run a nicely configured Nex' server.

I want to set up a "home" server. For safety reasons I think it would be a good idea to seperate a Nexuiz Server to its own virtual machine. Some months ago there was a proejct in the computer magazin c´t where they seperated also the router and the file server and the firewall into seperate virtual machines.

The problem for me is that I don´t know the minimum requirements for a Nexuiz Linux server to optimize a virtual machine. A standard Suse package for example would be a little "overkill" I guess.

The dedicated server has very low requirements. Some people reported it uses around 100mb ram but i never saw it use more then 40 mb here.You will need 250mb for the files + (if enabled / used) a few mb for the server log and custom maps.
But normaly a chroot jail should be sufficent on a unix type os. There was a thread about this a few days ago.

I wouldn't suggest to run a dedicated Nexuiz server on a VM.
It's right that the server doesn't need many resources, however, the server is time-critical, which means that the resources it needs must be provided as fast as possible without waiting times, otherwise it will lag and start chopping for all players who are connect to it. And I do think that virtual hardware won't always provide resources immediately. FPS Gameservers should generally not be run on such devices (e.g. called "Virtual root server machine", etc.)

This could be right, but on the other side it is not tested so far and totdays prceosser power is realy fast and test have shown that a VM has only an overhead of max. 10% of the cPU power.

Let´s ask from another side: Is there anywhere a guideline what is neccessary to set up a minimum Linux for Nexuiz? No graphical interface, etc, just the minimum to run the game server in a network.

Than I will maybe have a chance to make a test, I have VMWare workstation to setup VM with Linux for Nexuiz.

Just use a Debian base install (no X11, just skip the package installation step at the end of the install). Starting from that, install either unzip or bsdtar and extract Nexuiz with it. The dedicated server only needs one additional library - zlib - and you for sure already have it then.
