CTF + DOM

Postby The mysterious Mr. 4m » Wed Aug 23, 2006 11:52 pm

While contemplating about dom points for vitamea an idea of a CTF-DOM hybrid mod came into my mind:

There are one or more Portable Dom Points on each side. The number could be set via a cvar. You would collect the "pdp's" from the hostile territory and bring them to your own corresponding Point Holder Places.

By the way, is anyone working on the "tossing the flag"-football -/- nexball- thingy?

That sounds a bit like quake4s deadzone. There you have to collect a item and bring it to the center of the map the 'deadzone' and got points for every second you spend there while holding the item. The fun thing about this was that it concentrated all the fighting in one place and thus the action got quite hot. But that was a FPS drag even on my computer :P.

So your idea does sound interesting but if 'You would collect the "pdp's" from the hostile territory and bring them to your own corresponding Point Holder Places' does mean you just have several 'enemey flags' and 'several own flags' it might just degenerate the game to 'find the fastest route and capture' as it might prove impossible to protect more then one flag at once. Normal CTF can already be quite a pain in the rear with a bad team and such a idea would make it even worse.

What might work is to have several PDPs that you have to collect from the map and bring them to the flags. So you go out to collect those PDPs from the enemeys base and bring them back to your own flag. That way there are two points each team has to protect so people can gather points. The game might be a bit more determined that way.

So which of those two did you mean or did i get you wrong? :)

Neither. :P Sure, it needs tuning but i think it would make an interesting game. I will do the thinking another time.

totally forgot this topic! :D

hmm... this could really be fun! either team play or "simple" death match. lets say there are 4 flags. each one has 20 points. each capture "transfers" you one point. the match ends when all flags are "empty".

the flags could be like runes, so they will give you special abilities like speed, extra lifes, shield or invisibility.

what do you think?

Here's one variation of the idea: You grab the flag (perhaps more than one) from the enemy's base and bring it back to a holding area in your own... you then have to keep the flag inside that area for a set amount of time to score, e.g. 30 seconds. If you get forced out of the area by the enemy, the counter resets. You get X points for a capture and the flag respawns back at the enemy's base. The flags would work independently so that you can capture even if the enemy has your flag. I imagine that the game dynamics would be quite interesting.

Another variation which is probably close what to Esteel described in Quake would be a neutral flag on the map (which would make it possible for up to four teams to play) that you have to carry and hold within a roaming region for X seconds to score. The designated scoring region would move around the map at intervals and become highlighted to make sure that everyone knew where it was (perhaps even with radar at some point). New maps could have bases for each team so that as the region moves around it will occasionally end up in different bases and give that team a temporary advantage due to closer respawn points. The flag could either respawn at some random point on the map after a score or be kept by the current flag carrier.

This isn't quite on topic, but there used to be multi-ctf tournaments i used to play on the weekends in UT....4 bases in a map, and you can carry as many flags as you like (if i rememver correctly) then have to return to your base and capture, whilst defending your own, it was really fast paced and good.
