THe problem Im having now is the in the places where the clipping version intersects the terrain it block light out and causes "pools" of shadow

Strangely enough I had something similar a few months ago. I am running opensuse 10.0 with the nvidia drivers from the website and it kept freezing or actually rebooting during play.
I tried everything... downloading the drivers and recompiling, re-seating the card, even booting into windows, (spit, swear), which was on the same hard disk in a seperate partition.
In the end it turned out to be???
The hard disk! Yeah, that's what I thought too! The disk was failing and paging in both Linux and windows suffered which resulted in the aforementioned behaviour. Now I come to look back through the logs it WAS staring me in the face IF I'd bothered to look. Just thought the card was going squiffy.
'uncorrectable errors.... apparently some military guy, (colonel something IIRC), was panicking about it'. WHO KNEW?
Anyway - I'd check your hardware before you start any major overhaul of the op.sys/drivers/etc.
