Total n00b needs help starting

Postby opticsnake » Thu Sep 21, 2006 12:18 pm

OK, I'm pretty new to linux so I'm not sure exactly what to do. I've unzipped the file to the Desktop. What do I do now? Which file do I need to execute and how should I do it? From a terminal or can I just double-click the file? I tried double-clicking the nexuiz.exe file but then it asks what program I want to use to open it.

BTW, I'm running kubuntu.

The .exe files are for windows do not even think about them :P

The text i wrote in some other thread:
esteel wrote:You just need to extract the zip file and start one of the two nexuiz-linux-glx.sh or nexuiz-linux-sdl.sh like:
cd PATH-YOU-WANT-NEXUIZ-TO-BE
unzip DOWNLOAD-PATH/nexuiz-21.zip
cd Nexuiz
./nexuiz-linux-sdl.sh
OR ./nexuiz-linux-glx.sh

if you want it to be for all users:
become root (su or sudo depending on your distri)
cd /usr/local/games
unzip DOWNLOAD-PATH/nexuiz-21.zip
cd /usr/local/bin
ln -s /usr/local/games/Nexuiz/nexuiz-linux-glx.sh nexuiz-linux-glx.sh
ln -s /usr/local/games/Nexuiz/nexuiz-linux-sdl.sh nexuiz-linux-sdl.sh

Now every user should be able to start nexuiz with
nexuiz-linux-sdl.sh OR nexuiz-linux-glx.sh
as /usr/local/bin should be in PATH..

All this needs to be entered into a shell. You can also create a shortcut on your desktop to one (or both) of the shell scripts but i can't tell you how, i never had need for such a thing :P

Then again kubuntu is based on ubuntu which has Nexuiz packages. You should be able to search in install Nexuiz with your package manager. I'm not sure which one is used in Kubuntu. It might be synaptic.. I hope you know more. Those packages should also create links in you menu.. So if thats working you can scrap all that i said above.

If you are as noobish as you say :) you might not have drivers installed for your graphic card.. does
Code: Select all
glxinfo | grep -i direct

outout 'direct rendering: yes' ? If so you drivers should be installed and Nexuiz should run with the instructions above.

Thanks! I'm still trying to get out of all those bad Windows habits. :)

Actually, I managed to get the drivers for my NVIDIA card installed yesterday. I ran the program and it works fine! Thanks again for all your help!

Welcome to Linux

If you want, you can place a link to the application on your desktop by:-

1. Right clicking the desktop
2. 'Create new'
3. 'Link to application'
4. Name - Nexuiz, (or whatever you want to call it),
5. On the Application tab browse to wherever you've installed the shell scrip that works OK and select it as the 'Command'.

You can change the default icon that the 'K' desktop, (the desktop 'system' that is in Kubuntu), uses by choosing one from those listed as standard OR, (my own preference), downloading any graphic from the internet, (the stylised 'n' at www.nexuiz.com would be my choice), o your home directory, (/home/opticsnake or whatever), loading it into a graphics package such as 'gimp' and converting it into a portable network graphics, (png), file by simply choosing 'save as' in the 'file' menu in gimp.

Call it something.png and you can then use that, (you might want to resize the image in gimp for the best appearance), as the icon for the application.
