bots still move too fast on lowest difficulty

Postby tigmonkey » Sat Sep 23, 2006 4:14 pm

hi,

i've recently discovered nexuiz and i'm very impressed. the menus could do with a bit of polish, but the game itself is great.

i've played a lot of unreal tournament 2004 so i got into the swing of things pretty quickly, but i've got some friends and family who have never played first person shooters before and there is no way they can hit the bots even on the lowest difficulty settings. the way the bots act towards the player is spot on, they don't shoot at the player too often and when they do their aim is terrible. the only problem is the quick, erratic way that the bots move makes it impossible for my friends to hit them. i've tried drastically dropping the game speed to give them a chance, but then the game plays like they are wading through treacle, which isn't much fun either.

it would be great if the bots on the lowest difficulties ambled around in a predictable fashion and maybe stood still while aiming their weapons. this would make the game playable for new gamers and would greatly increase Nexuiz's user base.

thanks for your time,
tigmonkey.

Confirmed. I played a very dumb bot on Aggressor, and if someone had not played the map before, it would be very difficult to follow the bot. Also, the bot picked up so much health and armor that it took several rockets to kill.
The bots should move slower on lower difficulty settings because very few new players can compete with something that moves that fast and picks up so many power-ups, even if it does have bad aim.

There have been things done in that direction in the development version and these changes will possibly end up in a later 2.x version, but for sure in a future 3.x release. Qantourisc did some nice bot code changes that generally make bots behave more "human", especially in the way how they walk (these bots for example simulate keyboard movement).

I'll look if I can make them navigate or even walk slower easily too for the lower skills.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

You should also make the a level difficulty higher than Godlike. Or is there console command or a file I can modifiy to change stats?

Also, there a way to fake a higher ping when playing local? Because I'd like to train with bots but when playing on most servers my ping is never lower than 100ms so it makes a huge difference with aim and movement prediction. Faking a ping of 60 would be nice.

Open the console and enter "bot_<tab>", that will list all bot variables you can change. (the skill level is controled by "skil <number>")

well most of the variables are still undocumented but a few are explained in the wiki:
