ELO System Questions

Postby Bundy » Mon Jul 23, 2007 11:39 am

Ehm yes, i wondered about a thing which happened the last games.

Ranking points at challenge: NMK0eR71: 1000 MisterMeister: 1011
Ranking points at challenge: NMK0eR71: 1000 BBBBumkin: 981

In both games, NMK0eR71 had 1000 ELO points, but why? After he lossed to MisterMeister he should have had 976 Points.

And then there is a second question. I noticed in one matchresult where kojak won over morfar that he lost ELO points( http://www.planetnexuiz.com/ladder/inde ... ils&id=308 ). Is that allready fixed with the new ELO system and if not, isnt it a bit confusing to lose some points even if you are winning? Its for sure not so a big deal (was -2 points) but I wonder about that, win is win and should give points (even its only +1).

I guess the ELO calculation is based on the points each player had when the challenge was accepted, not when the match report was filed (the later would be rather stupid, since the order in which 2 reports are filed would change the amount of points you win/loose).

There's nothing to fix here, that's simply the way how ELO works. ELO takes the point difference of both players into consideration, so if one player wins by a marginal difference (as in this case), but has significantly more ELO points, he will actually loose points. The idea is that booth player's skills seem to be more alike than the ELO points would suggest, so the looser will gain a few points so that ELO difference between both players shrinks.

Makes sense too, anyways, I dont like it. On the other hand, it doesnt hurt anyone, so theres for sure no need for big crying from my side. ;)

All explanations from Kadaverjack are correct.
