A tournament sounds like a great idea. I'd like to see how long I can last. Will the matches be at a scheduled time, or within a general timeframe to be played at both player's convenience?

I fear that this shown script has enough other bugs which prevent us to use it further

and looking at and testing the script needs a lot of time which I am not willing to spend at the moment

since I'm doing this kind of "work" that so many others do as well, I'm talking about sitting in front of a computer and doing stuff there, I finally have also time to do things like spamming the forums (:D) or do more reasonable things like coding the nexuiz ladder.

First of all, the Nexuiz Multi-Ladder system is going to be opened soon, in a few weeks. This will allow us to have several ladders at once hosted on a single page, including 1on1 and team vs. team ladders.

However, this is the "tournament" thread and I spent some time to test the phpTourney script again, especially because it received 1-2 bugfix releases in the mean time.

Either way, now I think that this tourney system is usable and suitable for our needs.

There are things that already have been discussed here, and some that still need to be, e.g. whether the original design (which really isn't the best) should be kept or not, or the mappool, etc.

About the things we already discussed:
After the script is running people will sign up there. After signing up they will have to send a mail to a given email address, including this:

- provide your userID of the nex 1on1 ladder
- use the same username as in the ladder when signing up on the tourney page
- use the same email like in the laddder too
- you already must have played at least 2 matches in the ladder
- send the email with the email account used for signing up on tourney (which must be the same email you use in the nex 1on1 ladder) to verify your identity

This is needed to make sure that no geeks will sign up who don't give a shit whether they show up at the matches or not

The mappool is not defined yet. If not enough maps are available (which depends on the number of signup because this number defines the number of played rounds) we will use maps twice (e.g. in decider map of round 1 and as map1 of round2)

I think it's best not to limit the number of signups. if there are e.g. 18 signups we will start a 32-player braket (with the setting that double-elimibation will start at 16 players and not right at the beginning/first round). of course this will mean to have a lot of default wins in the first round, however this won't hurt.

so what do you think ?

I hope I got the system right, and I'm convinced it will turn out fine anyway.

Nevertheless, call me a party pooper, I don't think starting the tournament within the next few weeks will be a big effort. Look at the ladder, atm hardly any matches fought. Don't kill your valuable work by starting at the wrong time.

How about a beta-phase where a selected circle can test it, then officially start it in the middle of october when there's more ppl stop enjoying summertime and return to their rigs?

I'll launch the nexuiz ladder first anyway before starting any "real" work for the tournament

do you talk about a beta-phase for the ladder or for the tourney ?

Well the problem with using ladder accounts is that it will seriously limit the number of players in the tournament. I know its a good idea to make sure that people will show up but maybe thats a bit too harsh.
Just compare the number of people in this forum to that in the ladder. I think if that tournament was announced here it might get quite a response. (Or not :P ;) ) What i would find cool is to accept players that donate 5euro to Nexuiz (or the tournament). Kind of a entry fee. But that will limit the tournament also. Is there some easy way for this?
